The last sermon on the Seven Sayings on the cross was given on Good Friday instead of the usual Sunday. It's kinda long so let's get going on it. We started with Luke 23:46 "And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, "Father, into thy hands I commend my spiriit; and having said this, he gave up the ghost ." Think about this. He's seconds away from death yet, he has enough strength to shout out his last words. He wants us to hear this. He wanted all those around him to hea...
I was cleaning out my son's closet. Well actually he did this at Christmas time and left me two boxes of stuff he didn't want. As I was looking thru these boxes I pulled out a couple of interesting books to peruse. One in particular has had me, tea in one hand and this book in another busy for the last hour or so. It's an old book fillled with short stories, poetry and quips from well known authors, Poets, Presidents and other greats I've recogized from time past. Names like Robert Br...
My son called me a few nights ago. Aly's favorite Golden Retriever back home lay dying. This dog is one of the victims of the latest pet food fiasco. They had given the dog surgery cleaning out the stomach but to no avail. He called me the next morning and said Aly's sister came home to find the dog dead near the door when she got home that morning. He said Aly was having a really hard time. She talked about this dog all the time, even talking to the dog over the phone while away at c...
I'm home today nursing a very sore toothache, actually it's an impacted wisdom tooth that has been years in the making. I was advised to take this out when I was in my early 30's but it wasn't bothering me then. It will not be an easy one to take out, as a bone has to be cut to get at it. The very thought of this makes me ill. I called the surgeon (a friend of mine) and his secretary put me in for the 8th of June. There is no way I will be able to make it that long. Advil is my cl...
As a student of the bible, I love to hear about the discoveries that have over the years only given much credence to this book. There have been many stories of brilliant minds that have attempted to disprove the scriptures only to succumb to the realization that the bible is truly a magnificant piece of literature unlike any other. William Albright, known for his reputation as one of the great archaeologists, said: "There can be no doubt that archaeology has confirmed the substantial ...
God speaks in mysterious ways so says the famous quote. Do you think that's true? I find for the most part, he's pretty direct when he speaks to me. I've heard him loud and clear so many times I'm tempted to put it all down in a book....usually I mark my bible with the "experiences" I've had with God, noted completely with the dates of occurrences. This week an incident happened, actually involving my husband, that reminded me that God does listen and does care for our every need. H...
Don't you just love family dynamics? What is it about families anyhow? Many times we treat family members much worse than we do complete strangers. Why is that? Shouldn't it be the other way around? Why do we argue and tick each other off? Is it because we know we can and get away with it? Well sometimes that's not the case but we do seem to take more abuse from family members than we do anyone else. I guess I'm in big doggie do doo with my eldest right now. Well maybe dog doo bu...
The book of Leviticus is filled with the rules and regulations of the Sacrifical system that the Jews were to be under commanded by God. We see in Chap 16:11-14 what is called the Day of Atonement. This was a most Holy Day in all of Israel. This was the day that atonement was made for their sins of all Ithe Nation. This system was instituted to kill animals, instead of themselves for the sin commited by them. They needed to have their sins completly covered to remain in good standing befo...
We have now come to "It is Finished" the sixth saying of Christ on the Cross. I'm really enjoying this series of seven and have eagerly looked forward to the next. Every week I find that I come away with a new appreciation for what what was done for me so many years ago understanding quite well that I am responsible for the scars in his hands. Here's the text for this week, John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gav...
My son David called to tell us the good news. His roommate and buddy Josh McDougal broke the four minute mile yesterday in VA. He was very excited to not only see this in person but see it happen to his good friend. I guess Josh did a 3:57 breaking his PR of 4:01. This is the fastest time in college this year for sure. This kid is unbelievable. He's broken records all over the place. I think he's like a 15 time All American. He's undefeated in the regular seasons losing usually ...
Ok, I'm not making a big deal out of this, but I hung out clothes for the first time since last fall!!! I know, I know....little things. But I really enjoy hanging out clothes on the line vs drying them in the dryer. I already devoted a whole blog to this last Spring so if you want details, you can go back in time..........heh. Today was a beautiful sunny day. Cool, but nice. There's still snow on the ground but enough patches of grass (still soggy) for me to maneuver over to...
A Republican Friend sent me this and I thought I'd pass it along. I loved it. I've heard it said many times, "if you're not a Democrat when you're young you have no heart and if you're not a Republican when you're old, you have no brain." A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, and was very much in favor of the redistribution of wealth. She was deeply ashamed that her father...
I'm looking to get out of here, even for just a few days. It's mud season in full swing and it's not pretty around these parts. The grass is peeping from under the snow in spots which is a great thing to see after a long winter. The mud I could do without. In our neck of the woods we have five seasons. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Mud Season. This past week we had a few friends come over including the guy who just put in my new laminate flooring. Each one without exception got ...
What is spiritual thirst? Are we thirsty? How does the world respond to such thirst? How do the churches? To be spiritually thirsty is to desire God and things of God as Christ did on the cross. Are we complacent and apathetic, or are we thirsty for God? When I look at the world and all that it has to offer, I see hardly any thirst for God. When I look at the churches I don't see much difference. Is the world squeezing us into their mold? I see the church sounding and looking ...
Today is the fifth in the series of seven sayings of Christ upon the Cross. Today, the fifth saying is "I thirst ." I was really looking forward to this one wondering how much could actually be said about so little dialogue. Wonder no more. There is plenty not only to say, but also to think about. We started with John 19:28-29: "After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled said, 'I thirst.' Now there was set a vessel full ...
