The following piece was written by my college son and published in the newspaper. I thought it was thought provoking. The newspaper has received quite a few comments on this.

Santa vs. Satan

It is a complicated, biased, horrible train of thought. On the one hand stands Santa Claus himself. We normally drive the thought into our child’s mind that Santa Claus, Ole’ Saint Nick, is the saint of the modern times. Santa Claus brings presents, which in turn bring joy to us all. Perched on the other hand is the darkened figure of Satan. The red-clothed devil appears with a pitchfork and breathing fire through his nostrils. With a quick switch of letters; a move of an A here, a switch of a T there; and a bounce of an N over here transforms our lovely characters into a surprising conclusion. After the scramble we realize the Divinci Code of Christmas: Santa Claus and Satan are the same being!

It makes perfect sense and is now understandable after all this time. Growing up, running to the Christmas tree to open presents was always the highlight of the month of December. The distraction of presents kept us from realizing the true meaning of Christmas. Christ. Instead of praising the birth of our Lord, we instead worship the red-stained fattened figure of Santa Claus. Trying to gain our praise, worship and…our souls. Since the creation of time, another figure has tried this trick. Sound familiar?

A fat red figure slips down our chimney’s every winter, while we are all sleeping soundly, not noticing the temptations…I mean presents…that are put all over our homes. We can never catch this character, or even see him for that matter, but his evidence is left all over. A faint remembrance of another such person tickles our minds, yet the fond memories of presents dominate our thoughts. Temptations, in the form of presents for those who “believe in him” and a habit of showing up untraceable are familiar. Sound familiar?

Now for the red costumes. We have always seen our favorite fat fellow every December 25th in a red coat large enough to capture his large figure. This man of gluttony, temptation and giver of selfishness dons a cap of red, pants of red and boots as dark as his heart. Red is a symbolic color. It represents many things- anger, heat, fire, danger and…the great man downstairs. Sound familiar?

It is a hidden subtleness that is represented underneath the cloak of happiness. The happy fat man that brings us all joy is more than just happy and fat, he’s the devil. It is time to let the children know the truth of this dishonest secret that has been held since Satan has overtaken the identity of Saint Nick.

Santa no more, Satan has no power here!

Well my son wrote it that way. It's a serious article written in a humorous way. I know many Christians who do not bring their kids up on Santa Claus. We did when they were little, but we also always reminded them about the true meaning of Christmas. It wasn't about Santa but about the birth of Christ.

Today, I'm afraid many do not know this.

"It's a serious article written in a humorous way."

I don't find it humorous, I find it sickening. A lot of people believe this kind of thing. I know of no one that "worships" Santa Claus, nor do I know of any attempts by the persona to 'gain our souls'.

I feel sorry for people who let empty religion so taint their minds that they become unable to think in any other way. If your son really meant this seriously, I would suggest psychiatric help, or maybe cult counseling/deprogramming. Little religious robots.

This isn't funny.  Not even slightly.  It's sad, and I feel sorry for you.

Yeah, Santa is after our souls.  He doesn't leave presents under the tree, he steals little kids souls.  Please.

I had a self-imposed blacklist, and yours was the only blog on it.  I violated that by coming here - what you said was so outrageous that I simply couldn't let it go without making a comment.  However, the blacklist is back in effect now, and I think that's a very, very good thing.  You're more than welcome to come to my blog, though.

over reactions why?

KFC - I will join you in the robotic and sad line - I found it an interesting read and I can understand what he is trying to say.

From a christian point of view he has a point it does detract from the real reason for christmas.

I do believe I agree with the anon Baker and Dharma have reacted a tad strongly to the article.

Perhaps putting it under humor was the mistake, I would have put it in religion or just blogging.

Thanks Jen, I expected various reactions exactly just like this. He already got similar strong responses when it was published.

I did put it under blogging but he wanted me to put it under humor because of the way in which he wrote it so I switched it.

Dharma always waits to reply strongly against me AFTER someone else does. I'm certainly not surprised by her answer, a bit surprised by Baker's tho.

Satan will do all he can do to take us away from Christ. It's his main job. He usurps to the nth degree. To steal what belongs to Christ. He's a thief and a deceiver. Isn't that what we are doing when we tell the children that SANTA is coming? Are we not deceiving them? I do know many that refuse to do this....and I say kudos to them. They are going against mainstream and usually that is a good thing.

Do you realize Dharma you like to hit and run here? I'm sorry you feel this way. I'm not sure why I'm welcome on your blog. It's clear you don't like me or what I have to say. So I try and do you the respectable thing and I stay away.

Let's not forget that Satan supposedly has a bunny suit, too. The problem is Christian fundamentalist zealots have a problem with any cultural phenomenon that doesn't promote their beliefs. Gosh, what about those awful Jews with their totally alternate holiday, satanically inspired to divert from Christmas, right KFC?

No wonder people want to purge fundamentalist influence from culture.

I'm thinking you're referring to Hanukkah? Do you realize where that bit of history comes from? Trying googling Antiochus Epiphanes and 165-168 BC. There's nothing wrong with their celebration. It has nothing to do with usurping Christ. It's even mentioned in John 10:22.

Man made holidays are fine as long as they don't take us AWAY from God Baker. Anything that does so is considered an idol to a Christian. In this case, it would be Santa.

I know you loathe the Catholic Church, but Saint Nicholas is the original source of Santa, not Satan. You know the one - he put a bag of gold through the window of a starving family/unmarried girl who needed a dowry. His generosity became mirrored in the process of present-giving and spread worldwide as the Catholic and Orthodox Churches did.

You can blame Coca-Cola for the red and white Santa; prior to their ad campaigns in the early 20th century Santa/St Nicholas was traditionally shown in other colours.

Yes, I know where Hannukah comes from. The point above is:

"Satan will do all he can do to take us away from Christ. It's his main job. He usurps to the nth degree. To steal what belongs to Christ. He's a thief and a deceiver."

I guess you draw the line with expressing your intolerance when it might be seen as intolerance of Jews. Intolerance is intolerance, though. If you are going to forgo condemning them for distracting from the supremacy of your beliefs, you might go a little further and grant the rest of us that courtesy.

Claiming that kids are worshiping Satan by enjoying the idea of Santa Claus at Christmas is no different than condemning other religions for diverting from what YOU believe the holiday is about. This is no different than the people you argue against who want to chance "Christmas" to "Holidays" in public. You paint Christians as wrong to divert from Christ during the Christmas season, why not be honest and extend that to Jews?

on Dec 16, 2006
This is not a hard one Baker. Satan already has the Jews blinded to Christ. They do not worship him. So his job is done there. His job as I stated above is to usurp God's sovereignty by taking our focus off from Christ, whether it be Santa, the Easter Bunny or anything else.

Instead of cranking on me, just ask around. Ask the little kids in your neighborhood. Ask them questions about Santa, ask them questions about Jesus. See which one is more prominent in their eyes. Truth is in the pudding Baker. Test it.

You paint Christians as wrong to divert from Christ during the Christmas season, why not be honest and extend that to Jews?

First of all I didn't paint anybody WRONG. Everyone has to be persuaded in his own mind. I would be the last to dictate this on anyone. But I DO believe that Satan is behind the whole Santa Claus theme. It may have started out fine or it may have been a deception from Satan from the get go. Who knows? He does seem to take something good and twist it for his own glory doesn't he?

What we do know is Christmas is not about Jesus anymore. It's not about his birth but is all about materialism. Where do you think this is coming from? God?

and how do you know this? I really want to know.
