Will Grade School Be Next?

Well it was bound to happen. The kids are getting younger and younger now when it comes to experimenting with sex. Whatever happened to the days when the boys had cooties? Or the dances where the girls stood on one side of the room and the boys on the other not daring to even dance with the opposite sex? Here's the latest in my neck of the woods which made the 6 o'clock news. Actually it's on the news right now as I'm typing this.

A middle school in our area may soon be offering birth control prescriptions to some of its students.

The student health center at this middle school already provides condoms. Tonight the School Committee will consider a proposal to expand the program by allowing students who have parental permission to obtain prescriptions for birth control pills. Well at least they are asking parents. This must be a boon for Planned Parenthood. If they pick up the middle schools as future clientel their revenues are sure to go thru the roof.

A state official said that if the school committee gives the green light, this would become the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available to some students in grades 6 through 8.
Proponents said a small number of students are sexually active, but those who are need better access to birth control.
Anyone out there have a girl in sixth grade? How would you feel about this coming to your school? This is one of the reasons I'd be homeschooling today. Bad company always corrupts good character. It's very rarely the opposite especially at this age.

The latest news is that the parents will NOT know if their daughter or son is on birth control. The permission slip is for the child to be able to use the Health Center and that means anything could be offered whether it be an asprin or a birth control pill. There is also no age limit so an 11 year old girl would be able to obtain whatever she needed as long as she had permission to use this Health Center.

They voted 7-2 in favor of this.

I wish it weren't necessary but I'd rather sexually active kids be on birth control than pregnant.  My son is in the 8th grade and is 14 so I don't think it's a huge stretch to think that there are sexually active kids in the school.  Of course, this wouldn't ever happen in my town.  Everyone would have a fit.  Birth control isn't even available at our high school.

These kids need to be taught not to have sex, not how to avoid consequences of actions. The ones who are sexually active don't need protection - they need discipline and parental supervision. After all, if their parents approve, they can get them birth control. It's absolutely pathetic that instead of being against this behaviour, they say "They're going to do it so we should teach them about sex and teach them about protection and provide it." Then the kids say, "If we weren't supposed to have sex, they wouldn't give us this stuff, right?"

And yes, they're KIDS. Children. Small. Not allowed to work.

Wow. We've had it in our HS for sometime now. We're known up here to being very liberal. I think they said this is the first middle school in the country to start this. I guess the meeting was heated with parents very uptight about this. Think about this...even if a parent said no way and did not give permission for use of the clinic, what stops another sixth grader obtaining whatever is needed for her friend whose parent's are stricter?

I hate seeing 11 year olds messing up their lives. What does an 11-12 year old know about how this is going to affect them down the road? They have no clue.

I also think it's NOT the school's problem to be dealing with this. If kids are engaging in sex, then it's the parent's who should be supplying the BC. Who's paying for this? It's not the parents is it? So am I paying for this? I dare say yes. I am paying for others' children to be on BC? I'm sure Planned Parenthood is not "donating" their services.

My son's in 6th grade and girls are still "annoying."

My question is this.....where are 6th graders having sex?  My 6th grader is supervised 24/7.  He's not a bad kid, that's just how it works out.  Even when he is playing with friends an adult is within shouting distance.

I was a latch key kid in 6th grade.  Wore a key around my neck on a chain, spent lots of time alone...coulda slept with boys during that time I guess..thankfully I was immature and still fist fighting boys at that age and for many years after as well..hahah.

The nurses here can't even give Tylenol without permission from the parents.  Your state is well....I bet your glad to be moving.

I think I read somewhere that the after school unsupervised time was the worst for these kids as far drinking, drugs, sex, etc. In some ways, I think it's more important that you're home during these years than the little ones. The consequences of poor choices and lack of supervision can be very far reaching at the middle school/high school age.

All of mine are past this age, but I still have a major problem with Schools dispensing BC pills period. and Middle School is WAY too early for it.
on Oct 18, 2007
Is there any possible health issues from taking BC pills so early?
on Oct 18, 2007
GOOD ARTICLE, KFC. THANKS FOR BRINGING IT TO EVERYONE'S ATTENTION.

Well it was bound to happen.

Of dispensing contraceptives to middle schoolers, a friend, after registering her complete disgust, said, "You know one of the homosexual/abortion industry's goal is to lower the age of sex". And she is right. This is all part and parcel of the pervert adult world getting young girls ready for sex.

Now, I completely understand what Laura Ingrahim calls the pornification of America.

This is part of it.

Parents need to wake up, and take their own responsibility in this area and stop allowing strangers in the public school system do their jobs.

Yes, of course there are. There are health issues with adult women taking artificial birth control drugs.

These little girls at that age have just begun ovulating and it's going to mess up their hormones bigtime.

I'm sure these idiots who voted for this aren't physicians...they are political toadies of radical homosexualist/Planned Parenthood and SEICUS which have completely taken over sex education in Maine.

Well, if you don't want to worry about your child getting BC pills from the school, don't sign the permission slip for them to use the Health Center, which is really just a euphemism for 'Planned Parenthood Services.'

LW,

Yes, of course, you're right. To those parents who don't want this, don't sign permission slips.

But, in actually, it goes beyond this. This news item was broadcasted last night on Fox Cable. They interviewed a doctor and he said that the unintended consequences of this are going to far outreaching..

What he essentially said was these adults that voted for this and those in the actual in-school clinic don't think passed their nose..

In other words, those little girls who get the birth control becoming the center of attention....it's gonna be blab, blab, blab, and share, share, share.

Agreed.

These kids need to be taught not to have sex, not how to avoid consequences of actions.

Were it really that simple.

The answer is that both things need to happen.  Teach these children about sex and the consequences of their actions *and* provide them the means to avoid those consequences if they should happen to be ignoring the wisdom of their elders and teachers.

It doesn't matter if the parents sign or not sign really. First off if a parent signs the slips it ONLY means their child has full access to the Health Clinic. If the health clinic does dispense the BC pills the parents are NOT to know this under the privacy act or something. It's the kid's right (superceding their parent's in this case) not to tell their parents.

On top of that, for the parents who DON'T sign it means nothing if one of the girls in class gets the pills from the Clinic to pass to her best friend whose parents may be alot stricter about this sort of thing.

I'm betting many parents are going to be taking their kids out of this school big time. From what I understand only five kids (that they know of) are sexually active and this is for their benefit...or so they say.

where are 6th graders having sex?

sometimes on school grounds, including classrooms...sometimes even on the bus. Don't ask me details. I just have heard this is done. If kids are determined, they will do it. It only takes a few minutes to steal away sometimes right under supervisor's noses.

You should hear the stories I've heard about field trips especially overseas trips. Opportunities abound then.

I think I'm in the minority here when I say......there are worse things than getting pregnant. I'd rather find out my child was having sex via pregnancy than a deadly disease. Not to mention the emotional and physical toil having multiple sex partners will have on these young people and the baggage they will bring into their marriages someday.

I say, get rid of these programs. If a child ends up pregnant....it's not the end of the world. It's called accountability. It's bad yes, and unfortunate but think of all the other young ladies that will learn from this and not go there because of it. Now there are no consequences (so they think) so it's running rampant.

My best friend got pregnant in 10th grade. She had a child at 15 and ended up keeping her. It sure stopped her activitiy because now she had a young daughter to take care of. To me that's better than continuing going from boyfriend to boyfriend being sexually active picking up who knows what. It sure curtailed alot of us at the time saying....no way was this going to happen to us.

And I'd MUCH rather see young girls taking the pill than having abortions or bearing children out of wedlock, dooming themselves to a life of poverty and government dependence.

Not me.

I'd advise going through with the pregnancy and giving the baby up to adoption if they didn't want or weren't able to keep and raise the child.

It's been proven that artificial birth control drugs and surgical abortions wreak emotional, mental and physical havoc on the body.

After almost 3 decades of experience and study, the promoters of educating for sex and government birth control have failed to produce any evidence of it's salutary effects. In some areas, it's shown that pregnancy has gone down, but everywhere, pre-marital sexual activity has gone up and STDs are at epidemic proportion.

Educating for sex, besides being a useless, wasteful and repugnant public program, government-dispensed birth control corrupts the innocence of youth, it destroys their natural modesty and purity. The school's should teach self-control, not dispense birth control.
