Here She Is......What is She Really Doing?

We're having this heated, sort of, discussion here about beauty pageants. It started when my son David was asked to escort Miss NH in a parade. He had to be fitted for a tux and everything. He looks really good in a tux...btw....lol.

Anyhow, it came up that these pageants are nothing but girls putting their bodies on display, the result being men lusting after their bodies. In short, not much different than playboy. How is this different than say the swimsuit issue from Sports Illustrated?

I could easily take that position I suppose, but I chose to take the side that for the most part it's women who watch Miss America not men. That it's beauty, poise and talent that's the issue, not sex. Unlike Playboy, Miss America has a cause she devotes her time and effort to, not displaying her body parts for the sole purpose of making a buck using her body. In fact, there have been some girls who had to relinquish their crowns for posing in suggestive pictures or engaging in unsavory behaviors. I'm pretty certain she's going to have on "decent" clothes riding in this upcoming parade.

So, the question I submit here is do you think more women or men watch beauty pageants such as Miss America? In your household who is more apt to watch Miss America? Who is the target audience for shows such as this, men or women?

It's not a beauty pageant, it's a scholarship program!

Now that that's out of the way, I am less likely to watch the beauty pageant, because it's just not that great of a thing to watch. It's no fun lusting after women when your wife is right there with you, telling you to shut your eyes. "What! You get to watch the swimsuit portion of the contest, but I don't? It's a huge portion of the competition! I might miss one of them lacking poise."

Honestly, though, I think it's my Christianity that keeps me from watching it. I don't need that temptation, and it's easy to avoid. It's best to avoid all TV, in fact, but most aren't willing to make that sacrifice, including me. NCIS is such a good show, but Abby is hot. So it's a toss-up.

Honestly, though, I think that if they really wanted to do the pageant thing without making the contestants into pieces of meat, they could. They could easily just have them wear different dresses and skip the bathing suit section altogether, and the nightgown section too. Have negative points for slutty dresses. And have them answer more questions.

So, in conclusion, it is not any different than Sports Illustrated. If they wanted to raise themselves above that, they could. But they don't.

I see both sides of this issue in Mississippi where my husband grew up.

BP's start around age 2 or 3 and carry on right through high school.  I think its ridiculous for young girls.  Why?  Because I have two nieces who did it and won a lot, still win a lot.  And you know what their biggest fear is?  Being ugly.

So then the oldest hit puberty and guess what?  Acne.  The girl who used to stand on stage in front of God and everyone and pose in various clothing...now won't even lift her face in a room full of people, and she wears too much make up.

The sad thing is..when I say acne..it is a very minor case.  Maybe four or five pimples.  But that is enough to make her feel "less" beautiful and humiliated.....grrrrr.

If adult women want to parade around in bikinis...well, that is ALL about body.  If it wasn't about the way they looked then why not put paper bags over their faces and make them wear burkas?  hahaha.

I don't have a problem with women who take advantage of BPs.  I don't watch them (have seen them in the past)...too freakin boring.  But I don't think we should fool ourselves.  It IS about beauty, body and face.  Everything else is secondary.  If you doubt it ask yourself how long a contestant parades in different outfits..as opposed to how long they actually get to talk...hahahaha.

I love the questions...

"If you could get rid of one thing in the world, what would that be?"

"Uhh, it would be Miss China!"

-Cal Wilson

They SHOULD have more questions. Now that would be entertaining. And, prove they had brains in their heads. I can't prove it now.

hahah, I went that route as well. Didn't go over very well.

pretty much what the hubby said here as well. Have you ever thought about going into the ministry?

ha! my sentiments exactly. Haven't seen one in years.

Do you know this has been going on since the 1920's?

Yes, I thought about going into the ministry. Then I laughed and moved on.

Honestly, even if I can avoid a pageant or two, there are plenty of other temptations that I'm not as good at avoiding.

You're lucky. It took me a lot longer to move on, Jythier...lol!

I'm not cut out for it, doncha know. David didn't get to build the temple due to his sins, and I doubt I'll get to do too much for Christ, but I'm ready and willing should he call. But I find it more likely that my calling is to raise my children to be Godly Men and He will call them. That's my suspicion, at least, but who knows at this point? I'm still really young myself.

Yeah. I spent a decade and a half hoping and chasing that idea. Every minister of every church we attended encouraged me without my ever broaching the subject, leading me to believe I had some sort of "gift". Probably one of the best things that could have happened to us was coming out here so I could realize I DON'T have any such gift, and move on with my life.

Hey - keep building those musical and lyrical talents, and we could have the worship leader of the future on our hands.

I'm more of a folksinger...would definitely have to find the right church for that!

Oh well!

Glad you found out which gift you don't have, next step: Find one you do have. Good luck!

Glad you found out which gift you don't have,

Actually, I have the gifts, which is what makes it so much tougher. I just don't have the respect of people in the churches where I would feel most called to minister. Something about long hair and a renegade attitude they tend not to like. I'm not a Pentecostal, and I couldn't preach in a liberal church, so there are very few places that would take me as I am and allow me to minister...ever.

I'm honestly starting to believe my ministry lies outside the church. The church (as in congregations, not as in the actual body of Christ) has brought disappointment upon disappointment, heartache upon heartache. I've been much more fruitful OUTSIDE of the church house doors.

Listen you guys....if God can call a CPA out of his business he can call anyone!! That's what happened to us. One day we're in business the next day we're in ministry. It happened before we knew what was happening. It was surreal. Think Gideon (as in the book of Judges).

The thing is....we were NOT looking for it. We came kicking and dragging our feet. It reminds me of Andrew "dragging" his brother Peter to see Jesus. That was us. Oh, we loved God and we wanted to serve him....but not like this. But the church has exploded (in a good way) so we definitely think God knew what he was doing. We just didn't. Now we're seriously thinking of doing Missionary work as in another part of the world. It will have to be another wide open door tho. Because this is not an easy decision to make.

But I find it more likely that my calling is to raise my children to be Godly Men and He will call them.

This is a great task. Prayer goes a long way here. I have two sons very dedicated to God and I expect my third will because I have seen the hand of God on him. He just hasn't noticed yet. I don't just pray for them to be "saved." I pray for them to be strong Godly men that will be used by Him to do great things. I know my uncommitted Son has seen God in his life. He's seen too many "coincidences" to know these things just didn't happen by chance. It's just a matter of time. I'm a patient mom...well sometimes.....

Well, I was never really looking, either, KFC. I wouldn't have even considered it had I not so regularly been approached about it. The way I saw it, others saw something in me.

I'm very concerned about the state of the church right now, as you well know. The way I put it to one person, if I offend them, knowing that I am a Christian, then how can they expect to minister to the sick, the needy, the homeless? How can they expect to fulfill the Great Commission and the Great Commandment? There's a whole world out there that needs the Gospel message, and we have churches full of people either unwilling or ill-equipped to do it. Something's gotta give.

Anyway, I've hijacked your blog badly enough...lol!

I am too. So we agree. Especially here in the states. I think it's thriving in other parts of the world. We're really thinking there's a closing door going on here. In other parts of the world people are coming to God on their knees weeeping over their sin. In droves. Not here, short of a revival. Kiev is really interesting right now.

Yes, we have mossy butts. We do alot of outreach....get this...our latest. We are going to give away free gas. yep. We are going to approach the gas station and take 10 cents off every gallon of gas that a customer comes to the pump for. So if the gas is going for 2.90 the customer will pay 2.80 and we will pay the difference. As they pump we will ask them if they know Christ or have a church they attend. If not, we'll invite them to ours. We're also thinking of doing a raffle for a free tank of gas and also be able to do a follow up letter inviting them to come via mail. Maybe have them check off if they desire a pastoral visit. We would never go where we're not wanted.

Alot of people nowadays have no concept of church or how to go or even pick one. I had one person tell me she thought you had to be born in a church to go or you had to be invited by someone that went there. It's amazing.
