In A Split Second It's Over

I couldn't believe my ears.  It's just so downright tragic.  Horrible.  My heart went into my stomach at the news.  That could have been us, but "by the grace of God go I" came to my mind as I stared at the television last night.

A 20 year old drunk driver ran a red light and plowed into a vehicle that held a father and his three sons.   All four died on impact.  The father was 51 years old and his three sons ranged in ages from 19-28.  Not far off the ages of my own husband and three boys.

The mother was not in the car, but I'm thinking at ths point she must wish she was because she's left alone with no husband and no children.  Her entire family was wiped out in the blink of an eye.  All because a young man thought it was ok to drink and drive.  I can't even begin to imagine her pain.

From what I understand the young man lived and will be charged with the four deaths.  His own father broke down on television sobbing for the family that was destroyed because of his son's stupid selfish actions.

They are putting cameras up all over the place to catch these red light runners.  It's really important now, especially with all the cars on the road and the hurried mentality, that we hesitate before we pull out at a green light.  It may be green for us but defensively speaking it would be a wise idea to check and make sure the cars are stopping at the red light on either side of you before you pull out into the interesection.

We can learn  something from this  awful tragedy whether we fool around with drinking while driving or just are oblivious to the drivers around us.  It is a reminder how potentially dangerous driving can be.

I'm praying today for the wife and mother who was so touched by this awful tragedy.  May it never happen to one of our loved ones and their families.

I thought this was going to be about the Nun here in VA.  Killed by a 23 year old Drunk driver (this is his 3rd offense in less than 5 years - so he has been drinking before he was legal).

Too late for my wife.  Her nephew was killed in 93 by a drunk driver,  My BIL's father in 98, same way.

I heard about the nun after I heard this story.  The same here for offenses.  I guess he's already had a suspended license and other driving offenses.  You have to wonder...why did he live and the others die?  I saw him on tv tonight.

Some people just shouldn't drive.  While I have never had a relative or friend killed by a drunk driver I have had a relative that spent some time (more than once) in jail and state prison for being a habitual offender.  It started when he was a young teen (too young to drive) and went into his 40's.

Every single time he got behind the wheel he was a disaster.  It was a wonder he didn't kill anyone.  He's now in his 50's and as far as I know is done with that life.

There's too much information out there for there to be any excuses.  I say, throw the book at them the first time they get caught.  Make it very difficult for them to ever drive again.
