I'm absolutely shocked that we haven't had a revolution by now.  But I think what we have here is the whole boiling frog theory.  We didn't see this happening at first and now we're cooked.

And the new laws and taxes just keep on coming with no end in sight.

Sent to me by a friend:

This may seem funny at first, but by the end, you'll realize the awful truth of our taxation system and what big government is costing us.

Sad smiley emoticon

Tax his land, Tax his bed,
Tax the table at which he's fed.

Tax his tractor, Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes are the rule.

Tax his work, Tax his pay,
He works for peanuts anyway!

Tax his cow, Tax his goat,
Tax his pants, Tax his coat.

Tax his ties, Tax his shirt,
Tax his work, Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco, Tax his drink,
Tax him if he tries to think.

Tax his cigars, Tax his beers,
If he cries, then his tears.

Tax his car, Tax his gas,
Find other ways to tax him fast..

Tax all he has then let him know
That you won't be done till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers,
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till He's good and sore.

Then tax his coffin, Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he's laid.

Put these words upon his tomb,
'Taxes drove me to my doom...'

When he's gone, Do not relax,
Its time to apply the inheritance tax.

STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, and our nation was the most prosperous in the world. We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.  What happened? Can you spell 'politicians!' And I still have to 'press 1' for English!?!?!?!?

Not to mention a land use tax in the form of park fees, etc.

We certainly do know how to tax, heh.

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, and our nation was the most prosperous in the world. In 1909 most countries in Europe were ramping up for a fairly major war - you might have heard about it. The US profited nicely out of its initial neutrality.

As for the specifics - you still have the largest middle class in the world, so pat on the back for that.

Mom staying home to raise the kids isn't so exciting when you realise it was matched by Mom not being allowed to vote and Mom not being allowed to even think about a career. Mom having an education was also discouraged, if not outright banned.

No national debt - it's a nice statement, but it's not true. The US actually had a deficit of $800m in 1909 (this is a Tea Party supporter site, so I assume it's sufficiently non-partisan for your purposes). In today's money (and working off this inflation calculator using 1913 as the earliest available year), that works out to be about $17,188,606,061.00, or $17 billion. Admittedly it's not a huge amount, comparatively, but perhaps 100 years wasn't as rosy as it first sounds.

So to summarise, goods(+services), income, and death are taxed?
