oh I didn't take it that way but can see your point now.  Although they all play the emotional card somewhere along the way don't they? 

I took it as more matter of fact.  He was stating his opinion and had every right to do so....instead of all those out there with their many opinions but with no substance behind it.  At least not like this kid.  Not only was he there and saw what was happening he paid a price as well.  

 He came back and told us about it firsthand.

And how many Germans see people like him as anything but a poor idiot too stupid to get a job outside the army? It's despicable.

It's like they say: freedom (of press) is won by soldiers and (ab)used by journalists.

I have never been a soldier (although I have been in a war), but I respect those brave and capable enough to fight for my life and freedom.

Yeah I agree with this...but the emotional parts, flag (all Americans have strong feelings about the flag (good or bad))...the music, the script writing, and of course him walking off at the end with his left leg missing.

I understand the emotional thing because I worked in tv, but I can also spot it faster now too.

Imagine the same speech, in a room with a blank back drop, no music, and no flag, and at the end it was cut off...you didn't see his missing leg.

How effective would it be then?  When judged only on content?

I'm not saying there isn't a place for emotion in an election.  I just think Obama tries to artificially induce it because he's got no substance, just really nice props to illicit emotion.

McCain doesn't need the drama frankly, his record should suffice.  And if he MUST use it, he should save it until November so the emotional fuel will be used to get people to the polls.

But what do I know?

Great video.  I like tugging at heartstrings when it means something.  It's important to his statement to note the leg.  Why not show instead of tell?  The proud to be an American thing was a bit over the top though.  I hate that song.
