Time to Stay Home

Yep.  Our very first hurricane as Floridians is coming directly at us.  All reports have it coming right over us.

I'm excited but only because I know it's only a Category 1 and there should be minimal damage hopefully.

Hurricanes, especially living inland, don't bother me so much but I'm scared out of my mind when I think about tornadoes.  They scare the heck out of me.  They did say, however, we would have tornado warnings, as a result of this hurricane.  So not liking that part.

What gets me about all this is the fact that people are going to the store in droves to buy water among other supplies..  Maybe it's the Yankee in me....... but buying water?  I mean can't you just turn on the tap fill jugs, fill buckets and fill the bathtub?   That's what I'm planning on doing.  I've got some cleaned out milk jugs I'll fill up and put in the fridge.

Someone yesterday told me he's not preparing too heavily for this storm only that he bought water for his dog.  For the dog?  Huh?  Sounds like a good job for the bathtub to me.

The only preparing we are going to do since this isn't a much higher storm is to go around the yard and bring in anything that moves.  So the flowerpots and lawn and lanai furniture will come into the house.  The BBQ grill will be brought into the lanai and that's about it.  We're also going to fill the car and golf cart with gas but that will be about it.

Then we hunker down, stay home and wait.  A category 1 should be not much more than high winds and rain of which we are in so dire need of.

I'm glad everyone is still safe and ok.

We had an earthquake in Hawaii when I was pregnant with Isabella.  It was on the Big Island, but we did feel it on Oahu.  No real damage on Oahu, but we were without power and things were nutty for a day or so.  I have a t-shirt from it, LOL.

So far tho, I believe this is only listed as a tropical storm but the wind gusts are unbelievable already so I can only imagine what it would be like for a larger Hurricane.

C'mon. You're from Maine and been through plenty of blizzards. Stay inside and hunker down with your hubby.

Hey, how about this new quick reply format? This is the first time I've seen it.

LOL, is that one you working at a fast food window, Tova, or are you part of a SWAT team?  I can't tell which direction to go with that guy, haha.

Fay was pretty much a flop over here on the west coast of beautiful, sunny FL. Not that I'm complaining or anything...

Rode out Charley when he came thru and, trust me, the nonsense the gov't tries to pass out that he was only a cat 4 is nonsense. Been up close and personal when several tornados when I was up North. Up close and personal meaning within a few 100 ft.

And, as far as snow storms, the White Tornado back in '77 was lots of fun - sustained winds of +70, temps waay below zero, and blizzard conditions. A bit over 6' of snow in 3 days. Lowest barometric pressure recorded. Fun, fun, fun...

yeah, we were saying last night....."Fay Fizzled" or "Fay was a Flop" because while we did get some wind and a tad of rain, it wasn't really too much out of the ordinary.  The only thing I'd say was a bit off was the fact it's been grayer than usual these last few days.  Lots of overcast here still.

ya, I finally figured it out.  I usually come on and check my blog from my home page first and then head over to the forums or replies afterwards.

If only we could say that about all the hurricanes.

I just tuned in the weather channel and they are reporting a few areas on the Florida coast that got hit by a tornadoe which  damaged 15 or so houses. At least one person who was kite flying in the ocean was blown ashore and the wind slammed him into a cement building...he's in critical condition. I'm sure we'll see plenty of flooded streets before it's all over and done with.

I was going for tech support, but I'll take swat.

boy, it's been one weird storm down here.  Some places have received 24-30 inches of rain!!!!  Floods south and east of us but not here thank goodness.

Fay was coming right at us in the beginning, then unexpectedly took a turn to the east right before it was scheduled to touch base in my neck of the woods.  So nothing much happened here.  It got windy for a day and a bit drizzly and misting but nothing big.

Then yesterday it got really ominous around dinnertime.  We turned on the news and saw that Fay was coming back from the East Coast and traveling inland again but this time north of us.  So while we escaped the fury of Fay we still got the back of Fay last night.  It rained all night and still is coming down this morning.  It's not heavy but seems to be a light to moderate rain and I imagine we'll see rain most, if not, all day today.

I knew something was happening because I was in the pool at 6 last night with clouds quickly gathering overhead and turning black and heard on the broadcasted radio that schools were closing for the next day (today) so had a feeling Fay wasn't finished with us.

Basically Fay won't quit it seems.  We've been three days dealing in some capacity with this storm, some counties more than others.

ok, now it's getting bad out there.  Really bad.

I'm sitting at my computer listening to the hardest rain I think I've seen since I've been here.  The wind is quite strong and as far as I'm aware we are  just getting the fringes of this storm that won't go away.   I'll have to check the latest news after this.

Normally, I'd love it.  We needed the rain and an excuse to just stay in and hunker down is good in my book but my husband had to, of all days, take a trip to Tampa for business. He has to go back tomorrow as well and it's a good hour and a half from here on a good day.

So now I'm worried about him.   I feel guilty staying here snug and warm in my home while he's out on business in unknown territory to boot.  It takes all the fun out of a storm.

Figures he had to go today of all days.

Fay, go away!

Enjoy the rain. We just went on mandatory water restrictions here.
