Literally

Anyone who knows me knows I'm a big believer in prayer.

I just wish I were better at it.

I mean I love God and I love to pray to him, but I wish I took more time than I do.  I know the benefits and the results of prayer as I've been on the receiving end to answered prayer many times in my life; some of it quite amazing but I guess it's like Paul said; "I do the things I don't want to do and I don't do the things I want to do.

Prayer is a hard discipline especially when things are going well.  Of course it's much easier to go to prayer when one is hurting or scared or know of someone else who is hurting or scared.  I love to pray for and with others especially when they are hurting and have no where else to turn.  Prayer shouldn't be our last response but our first hope.  But sad to say for many it's their last resort.

Did you hear the latest in New Zealand?  True Story

Two pilots (Grant Stubbs and Owen Wilson) ran out of fuel after their small plane coughed, sputtered and died.  They began to pray.  They prayed that they would make it over a ridge and not land in the nearby sea.  They asked for a level landing area.  They said if they had run out five minutes earlier they would not have made it.

They felt as tho they had an instantaneous answer to prayer as they crossed over the ridge and found an airfield they never knew existed.

They made an amazing landing in a field right next to a  20 foot high sign.  Do you know what the sign said?

"Jesus is Lord-The Bible."

God is good!

Cool story.

I think prayer is hard because when we first come to Christ, its usually ASKING Him something, about something,  whatever.  So we tend to look at prayer as asking....even if we don't mean too.

And when things are good, its hard to go to a place we consider needy.

I think prayer is just talkin with God...there doesn't have to ritual to it...just talking, unceasing...in fact I can't believe we are commanded to talk to Him without shutting up...hahaha....Poor God.

Reminds me of a story I heard once . . . true, like yours . . .

There were two missionaries, out in the boonies, and they ran out of gas. They were miles from civilization, so they prayed together to try and find a solution to this sticky situation. One of the two missionaries raised her head following the prayer, and said, 'Sister, I know what we're supposed to do - we need to put this water in the gas tank and the Lord will miraculously change it to gasoline, so we can make it back to the town near here.'

Invigorated by this inspiration, the two missionaries eagerly dumped their water bottles into the thirsty gas tank. After offering another prayer, thanking God for inspiration and asking for his blessing on the car, the one sister turned the key.

Yea verily, thus saith the car engine: instantaneous death.

Game over.

They ruined the engine completely.

I wonder why their faith was not as great as the two men in the plane?

Or, perhaps, there's a lot more coincidence in play than many of us believers like to admit.

yes that's what prayer is....just communicating with God.  I think God doesn't like rituals and probably says....."get on with it."

When I think of not hearing from my kids it gives me an idea what God must feel like when we get too busy for him.

faith in the wrong god?

Pretty strange comment coming from someone who is supposed to have faith SC.  I will chalk this up to your being young and not experiencing life yet.   You're just beginning..... you young buck you!!    Hopefully you'll understand more as you give your life over to God as you learn to trust him.

I suppose sometimes some things could be considered coincidences but I know for absolute sure because some of my prayers were so specific and bizarre there was just no way.  Just like this story landing in a field next to that sign.  After you have a few of these "coincidences" you just know God is watching over you and he does care.

It gets to the point you can actually recognize God at work in your life.

I try to start my prayers with a Thank You...but now and then I do forget.

I do have to say, though, that I am making more of an effort to pray nightly and in the mornings right when I wake up (just a very short one).  And being the Catholic that I am, I do bless myself before I leave the house.

Of course there are times when I do forget to pray, but I think I am doing a better job at it than I have before.

I would like to believe that God listens to each and every one of these prayers, and if he does not have time to grant the "big" requests, he is at least  granting me the small ones.

I never said these were Mormon missionaries . . . don't assume, because we all know what that makes us . . .

I have faith. In fact, I know that there is a God and that he answers prayers. I also know that he lets you play the dice as they lay rather than give you a re-roll more often than not.

He always answers our prayers. It's just that sometimes (read: usually) we don't understand his answer, because it's 'Wait', or 'No', or 'You're a big kid, you can deal with this'.

hey, I never assumed they were or weren't.

God does say if we aren't living for him and walking with him that our prayers will be hindered. In other words, he doesn't hear us.

Last August we felt a huge tug by the HS to move to Florida. So on our last day after visiting for a week we prayed together. We asked God that if he wanted us here in FL he would make us understand this in a big way. We needed a Red Sea moment.

My husband then went to our friend's house and got on the internet. He wrote a letter of inquiry to four CPA firms in the area, just testing the job market. Before he sent out the fourth letter he got a reply from the first one. They responded they would like him to call their office. So he wrote back and said he'd call them at 1pm. It was after 10 am and he wanted to get me first (we had no cell phones and I was in a rental).

He came, picked me up and we went back to the house. My husband made the call and they requested an interview that afternoon. He went in at 3 pm and was hired on the spot at 3:30. This was a high paying job with gads of benefits and he didn't even have a resume to give them. There was no doubt this was answered prayer. Especially after landing here God continued to show us confirmation.

So we prayed at 10 am and by 3:30 he had a fulltime job in a state we were not even famiiar with. We came here dragging our feet. By mid November we were unpacked in our new home. God put us here as we saw everything fall into place. We have no doubt.

I have dozens of this sort of thing. They can't be coincidences because this stuff isn't coincidental in the real world like this.

You are so correct.  There has never been a coincidence of such power as somebody looking and asking for a job actually getting one.

if it was just one little instance sure...I could chalk it all up to coincidence...but there was so much involved and everything fell into place. Besides.....It isn't usually THAT easy to get a top paying job in about six hours from start to finish with no resume.

Not only is there alot more to the story than this, but this has happened dozens of times. We are quite confident that God is answering our prayers. But I can understand how one with no faith would struggle with this.

God said, and I can completely vouch for this:

"call to me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things which you know not." Jer 33:3

go on then try me,

So far on this site I read about three thing that must have happened by the power of god.

A plane landing on an airstrip, somebody getting a job and a bomb exploding.

What? You want more examples? I've got em!

A plane landing on an airstrip, somebody getting a job and a bomb exploding.

all after a very specific prayer was issued; almost immediately. I mean if one prays and then six months later gets an answer in a kind of vague way, I could understand your skepticism. But these were very specific prayers with immediate results. Happens all the time to those who are walking in the spirit. God is good and cares about our day to day living.

Last year I was driving and very nearly ran out of petrol.  I then passes a petrol station I didn't know exisited, is that due to gods invervention?

The bomb blowing up and the job being got also happened very soon after people did things in the real world that are very likely to cause the final result.

If I throw a ball in the air and pray really really quickly that I want the ball to hit the ground and it does hit the ground it is not evidence that the prayer made it so.

no

I agree. It's called gravity.

So why is finding an airfield different?

is not about the airfield or running out of gas on the road. They were in trouble. You were in trouble. They could have easily died...most likely you would not. They prayed to God. You did not. God tells us that when we cry out to him he will hear us and help us. I know this up close and personal for most of my life.

I would chalk yours up to what you mentioned earlier as coincidence (chance) and while you may believe their's was a coincidence as well, they nor I believe it to be. It appears to be a result of a very direct and specific prayer and not only an answer but a huge billboard in their face to boot. God does have a sense of humor.

Now if you told me you were praying that God would direct you to a gas station as the last vapors of gasoline made their way out of your tank then I'd be more inclined to believe that. But you did not.

Two years ago driving a rental across the country we hit something in the road. It was late at night, not too many cars on the highway and no cell phone. We were very nervous as the car started rattling and making noises. We prayed we'd make it to the hotel which was still quite a few miles off the highway. At the exit, miles later, we really felt like we were in serious trouble. We were in unknown territory late at night on the highway. We prayed. The hotel was not far off the exit and we breathed a sigh of relief as we limped into the hotel. The car died right there in the parking lot as all of what was left of transmission fuel emptied out right there. Our rental company came and replaced the car. No charge.

On a wing and a prayer for us as well.

Praying something obvious like throwing something up in the air and praying it comes down and praying something not so obvious like keeping a plane UP IN THE AIR when it has no fuel is two diff things. One is a natural occurrance and the other is a miracle.
