So my husband passes me the paper this morning as per usual after quickly scaning the front page. He reads aloud the headline, bold and big as he throws the paper in my direction:
"Storms not fueled by warming. Federal scientist changes mind about hurricanes."
Really? The first paragraph out of Washington goes on to say:
"Global warming isn't to blame for the recent jump in hurricanes in the Atlantic, concludes a study by a prominent federal scientist whose position has shifted on the subject."
In fact this Scientist who is a research meteorologist and well known and respected reported that not only is global warning not to be considered as causing the increase but that warmer temperatures will actually reduce the number of hurricanes in the Atlantic.
Tom Knutson hasn't always felt this way and in the past raised concerns about the effects of global warming and their relationship to these huge storms. He even accused the Bush administraation in the past as censoring him.
The article went on to say his new paper has the potential to heat up a debate already simmering regarding this issue.
He now will join an increasing amount of experts who study hurricanes and have been skeptical about global warming all along saying there never was a link.
His study does conclude that hurricanes and tropical storms will be wetter and fiercer. His computer model is showing that rainfall within 30 miles of a hurricane should jump by 37% and wind strength should increase by about 2%.
But yet the debate is far from over as fellow Scientists are speaking out against these new findings.
So see it's all about interpretation of the evidence.
