Let's talk about ME and MY family shall we?

What did I do this weekend?   Lots of stuff.  It was a good weekend.

First I went to an Extraordinary Women's Conference in Orlando and had a great time with my friend Jody.  We got there really early at 5pm on Friday.  The doors weren't supposed to open until 6 but we just walked in, picked up our packets and headed into the big arena.  To our surprise we were the first ones there.  The band and the worship leader, my favorite, Charles was warming up and doing sound checks.  We got front row seats and planted ourselves.   A few minutes later, his piano player recognized me and waved but I wouldn't get to talk to Charles till the next day.  I picked up his latest CD, had him sign it and got to speak with him a bit.

We got home at 11:30 pm planning on leaving the next morning at 6 am.  Before I left Friday afternoon I put out a muffin mix, muffin tins lined with the little liners on the counter hoping to bake them off when I got home for a quick breakfast to go in the car that next morning.  Well I was pleasantly surprised when I got home.  My husband, baked the muffins for me!!!  This is like....HUGE!  He has NEVER baked anything in his life.  EVER!  He was asleep on the couch waiting up for me and on the counter was the plate filled with muffins.  How sweet is that???  He even did the dishes (in the DW) and put them all away afterwards!  I'm keeping him!

So the next day was spent at the conference and we had great speakers and musicans one after the other, all day long.  Rememer Blair (Lisa Welchel)  on "Facts of Life?"  She was there.  Mendica (sp?) from "American Idol?"  She was there as well.   She sang up a storm.  We had Mark Shultz and Chondra Pierce who was a riot.

I got home at dinnertime to find that my husband worked all day around the house doing some honey-dos he knew I had wished to have done.  So I came home to things hung up and fixed up for me including a bed moved to the guest room because they delivered our new mattress while I was gone.

Then I spent the rest of the evening getting the new guest room ready.  Lots of laundry and decorating.  As I was doing all this I got a phone call.  Looks like we are having a couple come Wed-Thursday from our church back home.  Just in time to try out the new room!  I did the whole room in Americana.  It looks really nice with the country blues, reds, creams and whites.  As I was hanging diff Americana stuff on the walls I decided to have my husband hang up a picture of Brian in his VMI dress uniform receiving his diploma.  That, with his formal oil based painting of him in his Senior VMI uniform made my husband uncomfortable.

He said....."not liking this."

"Why?  It fits with the theme of the room.  Very patriotic."

"Well it's starting to look like a shrine to Brian."

"Oh.  you think so? But the other boys don't have any military pictures like this"

"Yes, and there's no way the other two boys are going to sleep in this room without taking Brian's pictures down first."

"Ha!  Yep, can see that happening!  You've got a point."

So I knew I had pics of all three of them in baseball uniforms that just so happened to have alot of reds and blues in them.  Each picture looks like a magazine with them on the cover.  So I put up all three on a shelf thinking baseball is very American  and seemed to blend in quite well with the room.

So now it's a room all ready and one they can call their own when they come to visit.  There's a little bit of all three in there.  I'm just wondering if they will each turn their other brother's pictures around when they come to visit.  Time will tell.

Are they seriously that competitive?

hahaha

I read in one of my home interior books that photos of family members are best left to informal communal areas such as family rooms, or passages such as hallways and staircases....mostly because it can make guests feel uncomfortable having "faces" staring at them...especially when they're naked...heh.

It's just a general guideline, one I think makes sense, but I don't always follow.  I have a few pictures in our guest bathroom...heh.

yep.

ya, I know pretty much especially nowadays pictures in proper home deco is a no-no.  In the old days having pics displayed on the wall was a given.  I've been going to open houses around here lately to get ideas and with just a couple of exceptions photos are never seen.  I guess it messes with the style.

I've also heard if you're going to display pics do so in one space like you mentioned, staircase or one hall or entryway and leave it there.  Or even better have a small entryway table and put out a few pics and change them around.

The way I did it here in the guest room tho looks pretty tasteful because it's theme related so it looks ok.  But I do have guests staying this weekend.  I'll ask Mary what she thinks.

But you know what?  People like to look at pictures.  I'm always getting people looking at the pics on the fridge.  And at home I had pics on top of my tv center and I was always seeing guests taking a peek at the pics there as well.  When I go to other's houses, I also look at their pics on the wall.

I've got so many pictures I have no idea what I'm going to do with them all.  Why do we take so many pictues?  Really do we need this many?  Thank God for the computer now.  All my now pics get put on the computer most never to be printed.

I agree, that is why they do so well in open communal spaces.

It's a big no no to display photos when trying to sell your house...the reason is you want people to see themselves in the house, and the house, not your great pics.

I think your guest room is probably fine, as the people who stay there know your family...I guess if you think about it though...people who may stay with you that don't know your kids well...think about staying in a hotel room with pictures of people you really don't know...its not uncomfortable, but it doesn't "add" much to the relaxation....I guess....personally I don't mind one way or the other...I want my guests to be comfy...but how comfy can ya be in the formal living room on a pull out couch? heh.
