Are You Going?
Published on February 19, 2008 By KFC Kickin For Christ In Religion

A while back in my studies thru LU I did a study on Hell.  Most of it I was familiar with since Hell, Sheol or Hades is a big subject mentioned in the bible frequently.  Anyhow since I did a summary of Heaven it only makes sense to give Hell some equal time.  Here goes.

There are many doctrines in scripture and the one most denied or questioned undoubtedly is the doctrine of Hell.  There are basically three methods Satan uses  often seen in either unbelievers or those weak in the faith to discount the reality of Hell.

Rationalism is one method. "Since there is no God, there can be no hell."  Usually rationalism dresses up in the garb of Science.   Charles Darwin rejected the doctrine of Hell.  He said:

"Disbelief crept over me at a very slow rate, but was at last complete.  I can hardly see how anyone ought to wish Christianity to be true; for, if so, the plain language of the text seems to show that the men who do not believe, and this would include my father, brother, and almost all my best friends, will be everlastingly punished.  And this is a damnable doctrine"  "The Christian Agnostic"

Then there's ridicule.  Been there seen that.  They say, "There may be a God, but it is foolish to speculate about all those spirits heating up in some lake of fire somewhere.  Who would belief such things?"

Robert Ingersoll who was one of America's most famous atheists loved to ridicule this belief.  He said this:

"The idea of hell was born of revenge and brutality on the one side, and cowardice on the other.......I have no respect for any man who preaches it.....I dislike this doctrine, I hate it, I despise it, I defy this doctrine!"

hmmmmm he doth protest too much in my opinion.  What spirit is behind this?

Another method used by Satan to discredit this belief might be surprising. It's the method of Religion.  Yes.  Some say, "There is a God, but He is a God of love, and therefore would not and could not send his people to hell."   There are theologians who deny or downplay the doctrine of Hell.  Many cults preach no hell.

Hell is referred to by different names.  The first is Sheol and is a Hebrew word found 65 times in the OT.  It is translated "hell" 31 times, "grave" 31 times and "pit" 3 times.

There's also Hades which is a Greek word and is found 11 times in the NT.  It's translated Hell in the KJV.  Both Sheol and Hades refer to the same place but neither are really what we call Hell.  This place is a temporary holding place, until the judgment day, where all unbelieving departed human spirits  go upon death.

The last word for Hell is Gehenna and is also a Greek word found 12 times in the NT and is always tranlated correctly as Hell.

So where is it?   The bible indicates that Hades is somewhere down in the heart of the earth.

"And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.  They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them; and they perished from among the congregation."  Num 16:32,33

The bible also teaches us more about Gehenna.

"But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darknesss; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. " Matt 8:12

"These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the midst of darkness is reserved forever."  2 Peter 2:17

As you read this and more it becomes clear that Hell is located away from this earth, a place of outer darkness, to be found maybe near the edge of the universe.

So what will it be like?  We read in scripture that Hell is a place of unquenchable fire.  It will be a place of rememberance and remorse.  It will be a place of thirst, misery and pain along with frustration and anger.  This will be a place of separation.

Many joke about this...."when I go to Hell I'll have lots of company because all my friends will be there."  I'm not so sure.  I'm thinking it may be a place of isolation along with the darkness.

Hell was not prepared for man at all.  Hell was prepared for Satan and his angels and those that go will go as guests of Satan and his evil angels.   How sad that the one who will refuse Heaven, which is the place prepared for man, instead would choose to eventually descend into Hell, a place originally not created for him.

This place is a place created for eternity.  This, without a doubt, is the most difficult truth to grasp. How can a just God rightfully punish forever the sins that were committed for such a brief period on earth?  Only God can fully answer this but we can see thru scripture that Hell demonstrates the evilness of sin and the holiness of God.  Sins against God's eternal holiness will be punished by God's eternal justice.

So who's going to Hell?  Well, Satan will be there.  So will his angels, his false Christs including the upcoming Anti-Christ, his false Prophets.  Also on the list will be Judas Iscariot and all the unsaved people who ever lived on earth.

Many believe in the present-day existence of Gehenna using both scripture and even Science to back up this belief.  From a 1972 Family Almanac.

Astronomers have recently added two new objects to the growing list of strange and puzzling objects speculated about or found in the universe.  A "black hole" is the hypothetical result of a runaway or uncontrolled gravitational collapse of a supernova.  Eventually a collapsing object, such as a star, will reach a limited size, called the Schwarzschild Radius, which depends upon the mass of the object.  For the sun, the Schwarzachild Radius would be about two miles!  If the contracting object continues to contract to less than its Schwarzachild Radius it becomes a "black hole."  The gravitational forces exerted by the object are so strong that no matter or radiation can escape from it.  The light emanating from this object is trapped and effectively removed from the "observable universe."

I don't like the idea of hell, but I accept it as true.  I don't like the idea of lots of things that are true.

Hell was made for Satan and his horde, I can imagine how low on the food chain humans will be there.  Especially since Satan has used mankind as his field of rebellion.

Ya know, as an aside, I never really heard as much about heaven and hell and outer space as I have from your articles.  It gives me lots of food for thought.

Thanks.

Nobody can really like the idea of hell.  It's a hard concept.  I mean it's not so hard when you think of the Hitlers of the world but with others it can be harder.  I just look at it as rebellion against God whether it be Hitler or some fellow church member I sit next to every week.   It's not my call.  I wonder if it were, would I be any different in my judgment when I take into consideration ALL the facts?

.....I think I can hear a story coming out of you....

his false Christs including the upcoming Anti-Christ,

Well, we already know that the Anti-Christ is Mike Huckabee, so problem solved there.

Just teasing. Wanted to get your goat.

So, I have no scripture or doctrine to back this up, in fact, my opinion of Hell is based on the movie "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey."

Hell is unique and individual for everyone. It is the thing we dreaded most in our mortal life. For me, if I go to Hell, I'll be...

Camping. With spiders. For all eternity.

Adds a little humor to this gloomy subject, no?

This may not be your bent, but I'm going to ask you a hypothetical.

Let's say a boy was doing very well, obeyed his parents, did his schoolwork, went to church every sunday.

In 5th grade, lots of kids are throwing spitwads at Lisa in class.  It looks like fun.  Our hero, in a moment of questionable judgement, throws a spitwad at Lisa.

He instantly regrets it.  He goes home and tells his parents he wants to be a monk.  They agree, and he spends the rest of his life in the Agia Triada Monastery in Greece copying Bibles by hand.  He dies a natural death.  Everyone in the monastery loved him.

Now to the question:

According to God's eternal justice, he deserves to go to Hell right?

Now God may *forgive* him and send him to Heaven, but that's not the question.

The question is, does he or does he not deserve to go to Hell for this one sin based on God's eternal justice?

Cheers,

Ayreon

Your hypothetical is invalid, because you presume that a person has the ability to live for however long and only sin once. People have a sin nature - constantly sinning, not just sometimes sinning.

My hypothetical is theoretically possible, therefore it's entirely valid, as theoretically possible is the definition of hypothetical.

hypothetical - Wordnet
noun
1.     a hypothetical possibility, circumstance, statement, proposal, situation, etc.; "consider the following, just as a hypothetical"

I'm not saying it's likely, just possible.  Even God himself entertained this possibility as it is infered in the Bible that he intended for Adam and Eve (and ostensibly their offspring) to live in the Garden of Eden forever (for which it seems like this could only happen if they never sinned).  Also, KFC posits in the original article above that Hell was never meant for humans, only Satan and his angels.  This reinforces the notion that God is allowing for the possibility that humans would never sin, and thus deserve to go to Hell.

According to God's eternal justice, he deserves to go to Hell right?

Go to hell for what?  Committing one sin?  Listen carefully....we are not sinners because we commit a sin.  We sin because we are born sinners.

That's very important.  It's not individual sins that keep us out of heaven.  A dog barks because that's what a dog does.  We sin because that's what sinners do.  We all deserve to go to hell because we are all born with the sin nature.  It's being born with our sin nature that takes us to hell.  Adam passed down this gene to all of us.  That's why Christ said..."you must be born again."

Now God may *forgive* him and send him to Heaven, but that's not the question.

That's right.  It's God's mercy and grace (unmerited favor) that he gives us to allow us into heaven. Sin's wages are death.  This penalty must be paid. When we come to him in faith, we are reconciled to him.  By accepting his payment for sin (Jesus's death on cross) our sin debt is paid.

The question is, does he or does he not deserve to go to Hell for this one sin based on God's eternal justice?

We all deserve to go to hell.  None of us are exempt.  Becoming a monk or trying to work our way into heaven isn't going to work.  Heaven isn't ours to purchase.  It was bought already by the blood of Christ.  He purchased heaven for us.  All we have to do is accept what he did.   God loved us so much he allowed his son to pay our sin debt in our stead.

hey watch it girlie!!!

Hmmmm do you get all your doctrine from the entertainment world?  Time to hit the books sistah!

Camping. With spiders. For all eternity.

ewwwww this sure does sound like hell to me.  But don't remember anything about bugs in hell tho.  But who knows......maybe they'll thrive there.

No, it was just funny. They die and go to hell, and each is faced with the worst memory or possibility from their mortal lives. And I thought to myself, "That probably is what Hell is like."

Then I went camping. It was there that I decided that camping is my own personal hell.

Tangent alert!!!

Hey Ayreon, where did you get that name? 'Cause there's a totally bodacious European songwriter whose projects are under the name "Ayreon."

Haha...someone needs a straight man.

*feigns curiosity*  I dunno Zoo...do you?

Haha...someone needs a straight man.

Hmm, we'll see how it goes. Might need one of them later.

*feigns curiosity* I dunno Zoo...do you?

Nah, sure as heck don't.  I'm pretty sure it's not a balmy 75, though.

I just ask because over the years there have been two extremes, a frozen wasteland and a firery pit.  Dante's Inferno depicts Satan as being trapped in a huge frozen lake, but then you have the alternative viewpoint where there is much talk of fire and brimstone, probably because it sounds more painful than frostbite.

Heh, and to think I haven't started another argument on here...yet.

Thanks for answering KFC, you covered the points I was asking you to.

There's many directions I could go from here, but they would likely be outside the scope of the article.  If you are interested, I might pursue one with you.

Yep, that's the guy my nick is named after.  Very good catch.

Tangent #2:  I used blockquote (highlighted text and hit button) but it didn't work.  If someone could point out how to quote something, I would appreciate it.
