Or is it?

I was speaking to Gid on Loca's blog about Christmas and thought I'd ask you all out there a question. Here's a portion of what I said to Gid:

Just tonight I mentioned to my husband the very noticeable amount of secular type cards we got this year. Some came from Christians, no less. I've watched this trend slowly increase each year. This year I'm going to say it's pretty much two to one; non-Christian looking cards to Christian. They usually say "happy holidays."

You know, things like puppy dogs, kittens, trees, snowmen and even reindeer? I challenge you to check your cards as well. It used to be the opposite once upon a time.

I've got all my cards hanging on and around my bar. I've got so many cards I'm going to have to come up with another place should I receive more in the next few days.

So the question is this. Have you noticed the difference in the cards? Do you have more secular type holiday cards or religious "Christian" type cards? I'm running as I said to Gid about 2-1 right now in favor of the secular.

Now I understand that NOT sending a religious type card doesn't mean you're going to hell so don't go there. But I do believe and can see those that seem stronger in the faith are taking the Christmas time opportunity to keep the memory of Christ's birth alive by sending a card that depicts his birth quite often with scripture attached.

I got A LOT of cards and they are all secular.

Many of them are photo cards.

Do you really take it as a sign that someone is not a good Christian if they don't send out a card with a depiction of baby Jesus or a Scripture on it? Isn't that kind of a petty, nit-picky view to take?

I have friends of all different faiths and some who are agnostic like myself, and I don't think a snowflake photo card of their kiddos is a sign of them being poor ambassadors of their faith.

Is sending out Christmas cards Biblical? I don't recall anything in the Bible prescribing the mass handing out of Happy Birthday Jesus cards to friends during the month of December.

Aren't there more important matters of faith to be tending to? People hurting? Needs waiting to be met? Open hearts and ears waiting for someone to share "salvation" with them?

First off TW you've got to remember I've got the Christian world view and that's what I'm expousing here. Another thing is that I'm just making an observation after watching the trend the last few years. I would betcha 10 years ago or so ALL the cards I got were Christian depicted with or without scripture.

I've got a wide variety of Christian and non Christian friends. Some of my friends are baby Christians and some are very strong humble souls. I can, before I even open up the card know which side of the card they will fall on. I know most of my family members will send secular cards. I know ALL of my strong Christian friends and family will send "Jesus" cards. No question.

That's why I'm asking you the question. Do you see a difference like I do? You say you got all secular cards right? I got a mixture but mostly secular as well. I did get some beautiful "Jesus" cards tho and of course the ones giving them are the ones involved in church.

Last year was our 25th anniversary year. I sent out a photo card of us wearing Christmas colors (it wasn't planned) that we took in September. Tova even got one. The picture was a good one and one that marked a special event in our lives so I had it made into a card. There was no Jesus and no manger. But I did put in a Christmas message at the bottom. I only gave these pics out to a few of our friends and family. The rest all got "Jesus" cards.

of course and don't I try to do that? But don't be so serious. This isn't meant to be a judgment on card giving...just an observation and something to think about. I'm sure many don't even think about it much. I'm sure there are many out there that don't even know the real reason Christians celebrate Christmas anymore.

Isn't that what discussion is about? Isn't it good to think about things that others are thinking on? You never know when something hits you. In fact, I think years ago I was involved in a discussion just like this and vowed to only give cards that conveyed a Christian message.

I have noticed the shift toward the more secular cards when shopping for them.  I actually have to search to find anything that relates to Christ's birth.  I don't send out Jesus cards every year though.  When I lived in Alaska, I sent cards with Alaska scenes on them.  When I lived in Delaware, I sent cards made by the Amish community.

Most of the people who get cards from me know my religious affiliation, and MY reason for the season.  They know that no matter what the card says, my joy in the season and the reason for me sending the gift of a card, is to celebrate the birth of my Lord.  Even if the card says "Happy Holidays" to me it means Happy Holy Day (my Holy Day).  I don't think it takes away from God.  Personally I am especially thankful at this time of year...for my salvation that came into the world, for my friends, and family.  For being alive to see a New Year.  Any card that reminds others of my love for them is a good card.  If someone just sends a note that says...Merry Christmas...or I am thinking of you at this time of year...it means as much to me as one with a Nativity.

So yeah, I do see the trend you're speaking about.  But I don't judge someone's faith by the Christmas Card they send.  Satan could buy a pack of Jesus cards and mail them.  Wouldn't really MEAN anything because the rest of the year he's, well, Satan.  heh.

ha! I was just thinking about how my blog Satan Clause went over last year. Remember that? Hmmmm maybe I should re-run that again......NOT!!

My husband told me today, unaware of what I wrote here, that his very good friend and elder back home was commenting on how the cards are getting more and more secular over the last few years. He said even some of the Christians are unaware of this.

I guess I just want to remind others exactly why we are celebrating Christmas and the reason for thinking on such things as I am here.

My girlfriend who teaches second grade actually got to tell a second grader the true meaning of Christmas one day while they were coloring. He had no idea she said. He said "that's why we celebrate Christmas!" Her husband is having a fit because their son is not celebrating the Christmas Holiday as he did in school. He's 60 and his son is in second grade. That's a huge generation gap. Instead of Christmas his son is celebrating "sharing holiday" in his school. That's a new one.

Sharing holiday. hahaha. That just makes me think of a bunch of fifth graders sitting around "sharing" their innermost feelings.

Barney sniffs and wipes his nose on the sleeve of his red hoodie. "I, I just wanna share how my parents....well, they are only getting me twelve presents for the Sharing Holiday....and ten of them are clothes!" ~Runs away crying~

Sharing Holiday...hahaha....just strikes my funny bone.
