Is There Such a Thing Anymore?

Family Programming.

Remember those two words? Well I guess I kind of forgot about them myself until I recently read an article about this. I guess not having little kids around I've lost touch with Family Programming and instead have gone the way of game, reality and news shows. The only drama I really watch anymore is "Cold Case."

Is there really such a thing as a "Family Time Slot" anymore?

Whatever happened to the family hour of TV? Whatever happened to the family friendly shows like "Little House on The Prairie," "The Waltons" "Happy Days," "Highway to Heaven," and "The Cosby Show?" Do you remember watching "Gunsmoke" or "Andy Griffith" with your parents? Ok, I know I'm dating myself here, but it was a great time to sit down with mom and dad and watch these shows together. I still remember "Happy Days" was on Tuesday night.

I remember as a child sitting down with my Dad and brothers every Sunday night at 7pm to watch "The Wonderful World of Disney." I loved the little Cinderella Fairy that would come out at the beginning waving her wand to start the show. It was so exciting to see what was going to be on this week. We got to stay up a whole extra half hour on that special night.

The Parents Television Council Link study says in the six years since the last check-up on "family hour," there has been a 50-plus percent increase in violent content, and a 20-plus percent increase in sexual content during the weekday hours of 8-9 p.m., and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday. It seems as tho the demise of Family Programming started to break down in the 1990's when more adult TV shows moved in and replaced "Touched By An Angel" type family shows. Shows like "Friends" or "Seinfield" which really were geared to an older audience seemed to take over. Then of course the reality shows followed and now it seems as tho the game shows are making a comeback.

I say bring back the Family Programming. Bring out the popcorn and let's watch something decent with the kiddos.

The only things we all watch together are occasional cartoons.  Heh.

And they are mind numbing.  I usually read a book while the others watch.

If you like shows like Little House on the Prairie, Touched by an Angel.  I have two words for you.....

Hallmark Channel.  (It's feel good tv.)

I do remember the Wonderful World of Disney....there were a few years where my mom "banned" all tv except that!

It is not on every station, but there are stations that cater to this.  In the age of 500 stations, not all are going to cater to every faction.  You just have to find the stations that cater to your tastes.  Unfortunately, they are not going to be the commercial ones.

I miss Boy Meets World.

One of the shows that my boys and I watch together is Amazing Race. We also all like Survivorman on Discovery Channel. Those are the shows that I actually like to watch but I do end up watching Drake and Josh and the Suite Life with Zack and Cody with them too.

I love the Hallmark Channel. But we have basic cable here and we don't get that. But I do watch those Hallmark Specials everytime they come on. They never disappoint.

ya, I'm just saying the regular channeling basically CBS, NBC, ABC ect. The ones where you don't have to pay to watch. It seems as tho if you want to watch anything like what I'm saying you have to pay for it now, either by cable or renting videos.

ha! I have no idea what this is. Perhaps our age difference is at play here?

We don't get the Discovery Channel either. I guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and pay more than I am already for cable to get to see decent shows....sigh!

I'm from the old school and spending $30 a month now for basic cable (basically for better reception) goes against my senses.

In the old days, TV programming was free and the shows alot better. I'm not talking THAT long ago when I say "old days" BTW.....

How about just cut off all TV and post on the forums all the time instead? Then YOU control how family oriented it is.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that many (most?) families are busy and not necessarily spending a lot of time watching TV. The kids have activities and there's homework and dinner and bath time.

To some degree yes. I do think kids are way more into the organized sports at a much earlier time than we were at the same age. It does seem people are busier than ever running to and fro to these games and activities.

When my kids were in HS they were into alot of stuff but on our down times or inbetween activities it seemed as tho all we watched together as a family was "Everyone Loves Raymond." Looking back, this is probably our family show time together other than videos or the occasional movie.

Well, my personal opinion is to break out your own DVD's. Netflix is a convenience for us because it keeps recent movies headed to our mailbox.

Family programming is great, but I DO have a remote. So I'm free to turn off the filth if I choose.
