Falling Asleep to the Sounds of the Ocean

We had a great weekend in Kennebunkport. It turned out to be a beautiful weekend in a small quaint Maine village amongst the few tourists milling around and very few on the beach. I'm sure when the Bush's are in town things are much different.

We had a Pastor's Conference to attend. Last year this conference was held in Vermont. This year they decided to have this conference in Kennebunkport. Just weeks ago this place was quite the busy place when both the President of the Soviet Union and France on separate occasions both spent a bit of time here. Most likely we might not have been able to stay at the Colony Inn if they were in town. This Inn is about a mile from Walker's Point. One could easily walk to the Bush's compound from this Inn.

This very homey but very large Inn is the place to go when the Secret Service are in town. We spent quite a bit of our conference time in the Carriage House where Press Conferences are usually held when Bush and Company are in town. We saw the many outlets all over the walls where reporters and others would wire out the news all over the world. Pretty cool to be sitting there imagining what it must be like to be in a room filled with politicians and paparazzi instead of Pastors and their wives.

Anyhow we were wined and dined the whole weekend. For breakfast the wives were whisked away in about 7 or 8 stretch white limos heading to a banquet facility for a morning of fun. Later we were told that those waving to us as we sped along Kennebunkport probably thought the Bush's were in town. It's not a usual thing to see this many limos without it being something Presidential. Made our day!!

The whole theme for us was the Cinderella story. We, as the wives of Pastors, were treated royally. We had a beautiful breakfast thinking Barbara Bush was about to walk thru the doors any minute. There were huge presents on the table for each lady along with a smaller silver box. In the small box was a beautiful crown pin sparkling with many tiny colored jewels. In the large beautifully wrapped white present was a collector's item. It was a Cinderella Music Box with a clock at the top that really works. I guess the clock signifies the short amount of time she had to be Cinderella, as the story goes. These gifts went along with the little pumpkin carriage that was left on our beds the night before in our rooms were ours to keep. Along with the carriage was a rolled up scroll with a fancy typed message alerting us to the next day's breakfast activities.

At dinner on Friday night we all were treated to a Maine Lobster Fest. We had all the Lobsters, clams, oysters and shrimp we could possibly eat. I saw one guy go up three times for Lobster. Me? No thank you. It's too much mess. Too much bother. Give me steamers anyday. So that's what I concentrated on. I went up twice for steamers and shrimp. You can only put so much on one plate and along with all the other sides not much can fit with those clunky steamers on your plate. Desert was make your own strawberry shortcake. By that time, it was almost painful to try to swallow those last few strawberries. I was stuffed.

We then were treated to a comedy team of Bean and Bailey. They reminded me of a modern day Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. One straight guy to one who just couldn't do anything straight. One skit they did was pretty interesting. They did impersonations
of the King of Rock n' Roll (Elvis) singing along with the King of Pop (Michael Jackson). It was different.

We had some free time to peruse the beach on Saturday afternoon, so we took pictures of Walker's Point. I've been here before but have no idea where my pictures are so I thought I'd take a few more. There were a few picture takers over at the pullout directly in front of his house. I saddled up next to them and snapped away.

We also ran the loop around the town which we estimated to be about 4.5 miles. It was a warm and hilly run. It was a gorgeous day being close to 80 degrees. I had to take a break from all this "free time" and run over to a HS meet further inland in Poland. As we drove along for over an hour to get there, we watched the thermometer go from 77 to 95. By the time we got back to the car for our trip back to Kennebunkport it was a scorching 101 so said the reading in the car. Wowza.

Here's a few pics of the weekend. The first is a picture of Walker's Point aka Bush's Summer Home.

The next picture is the coastline right out in front of his house and to my direct right as I took the first picture.

The next picture is the Inn from the water. I was standing out on the breaker when I took this shot.

and of course a picture of us awaiting our turn to get to the buffet table.

The pictures are beautiful.

Sounds like a good time.  I imagine the place isn't quite as nice when the President is in town.  heh.

It does look beautiful and it sounds like you had a very good time.

Everyone needs a get away, like that. I know I do.

Thanks for showing the pictures.

Thanks but not as pretty as being there. It's so close to us, I don't know why we don't go there more often. I guess you don't visit places around you so much because you live it. At least that's how I've heard it put.

probably not. It's probably a madhouse. Kennebunkport is very quaint and upper scale. I see a big diff just watching the people and can see they are more...shall we say......."upper crust" than what I see around where I live. I also live in a very big tourist area but it's the mountains instead of oceanfront, and we get more hikers, skiers, bikers, outdoors type people. We have an L.L. Bean Outlet up here that's always busy.

Yes it's a good thing to do. I absolutely loved falling asleep with an open window listening to the waves crash against the rocks and shoreline. It was so comforting and relaxing and did put me right to sleep.

So you like all that seafood as well? It was quite the riot to see all the Southerners try their hand at cracking these lobsters. Many were from Alabama. For many of them it was their very first experience. To look around the big room and see all the "big shot" preachers with their bibs on was hilarious. I missed a good picture opportunity there.
