May You Always Be Happy

It's good to be back home!!

We've been on the road for about 10 days and now we need a vacation to rest up from the vacation we just had. It was not at all restful. In fact, we're both pretty exhausted. This is quite the norm for us. We never seem to really have relaxing vacations like normal people do.

I had it all planned.....or so I thought. That is, until David informed us a day or so before that he was intending to ask Aly to marry him during our vacation. This was after I made our plans. So how does that affect us? Well because we were part of the plan. He was supposed to drive us to Dulles on Monday, but instead we drove him to Greensboro on Sunday and then turned around and drove to Dulles the next day, all from Lynchburg, VA. Lots of driving for us.

Initially we drove from Maine to Virginia. The day after we arrived, we moved Aly's belongings from David's home, where he was storing it for her, to her new home and it was brutally hot. She had ALOT of stuff. She was in Florida with her mom for vacation.

We then had to drive David to the Greensboro Airport after church on Sunday so he could fly to Chicago to ask her dad's permission for Aly's hand in marriage. He then went shopping with her dad for the ring. He then flew to Florida where he popped the question on the beach at sunset while we were also traveling to another part of Florida from D.C.

He had to wait around all day on the beach arriving early by taxi until the time would come that her mom would just so happen to be walking by with Aly for a shopping excursion.

The night before he left I snapped pictures of David trying to learn how to strum a guitar. He's not musical at all. He can't sing either but that wasn't going to stop him. He had written a song (which he's very good at) especially for this occasion and thought a guitar might make a good prop and make him look cool in the process.

So he gets on the plane and he is approached by the pilot or co-pilot asking him about his guitar. David hadn't a clue. He plays along like he's Bruce or Elvis or something trying to get into the mode of a musician. Ha! I wish I were there to see that.

Anyhow, when Aly saw him from a distance on the beach, she said to her mother, "Is that David? No, it can't be. David doesn't play guitar." That's right, he doesn't. But he spent all day on the beach learning how to strum it so he wouldn't look too stupid.

When she got closer she saw it was indeed David and she was blown away. She started laughing when he started singing (he can't carry a tune at all). But it didn't stop her from saying, "yes" when he popped the question. She loved the effort. He's such a romantic. She's as blonde and blue eyed as he is dark and brown eyed. They look like the perfect wedding topper all by themselves!!

David and Aly met their freshman year in college and have been inseperable ever since. They now will start their senior year engaged. She is rooming with four other girls and he with the eight guys from the track team. It's going to be a busy year!!

So most likely after they graduate we will have our second son, and youngest, married off. He'll be just shy of 23 years old by then. Both boys married their first and only real girlfriend, if you don't count elementary and junior high that is. Two down, one to go. He may take a while.

Congratulations to David and Aly.
