None But One

Now we're back on track starting with Revelation Chapter 5. Here's the text for 1-7:

1And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals. 2Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?” 3And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it. 4So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it. 5But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.” 6And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne.

The scene, where we left off, is still in the throne room. We left the elders singing and worshipping God. As they are finishing the praise song John turns and sees something new. We see four occurances where John turns and sees a new thing to behold. We see this in verses 1,2,6,11.

In verse one he saw the right hand of God who sat on the throne. The right hand symbolizes power and authority, and in this hand was a scroll. This is not a book but is a "biblion" which is papyrus rolled up with writing on both sides. Many of these have been found over the years including one that was eleven or twelve feet long.

In Roman times you would have your will on such a scroll. You would list your possessions, roll up the scroll, seal it with wax and signet ring, not to be opened again until after your death. Roman scrolls had six seals as a witness to make it authentic. To seal something denoted ownership. Your seal was to be honored, not to be opened until it reached its final destination. This is not unlike today when we mail a letter. We seal it and send it, not to be opened until it reaches its final destination.

Scrolls were also used in transfers of land. You would put a description of the property and it's boundries and roll up and seal as you did your will. This would then serve as proof of ownership. We see a picture of this in Jeremiah 32:6-15 when the Lord requests of Jeremiah to buy him land. The deal was then sealed up in a scroll and the evidence of the purchase was given to another.

When Christ comes back he will claim the earth as only a redeemer can. He has the title deed and only he has the right to redeem it; to buy it back. He already paid a hefty price for it. This passage in Jeremiah is a picture of this similar scene in heaven.

This scroll has been put away until God's proper time to come about. He says to the Son, "the earth is yours. You paid the price. You have all the authority to open and break the seals."

The seven seals speak of absolute completion. There will be no breaking of these seals until someone is found worthy to do so. What's inside will not been seen until owner opens the seal himself. God spoke to Daniel about this in 12:1-4 when he said:

“At that time Michael shall stand up, The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people; And there shall be a time of trouble, Such as never was since there was a nation, Even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, Every one who is found written in the book. 2And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life,
Some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Those who are wise shall shine Like the brightness of the firmament, And those who turn many to righteousness Like the stars forever and ever.4“But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”

We see a hint of a rapture here as well as the end time resurrection. Daniel was troubled by what he saw and was probably only too glad to seal this book up.

Now is the time to see what is in this scroll. So the question is asked. " Who is worthy?" This strong angel with no name speaks loudly to show, enhance or to demonstrate that there is only one person who is so worthy to open up this document. The angel is proclaiming this loudly for all to hear. We see in just these seven verses that "who is worthy" is repeated four times. This is a significant role to be played in the end times. If no one is found worthy, then that would mean the world would stay the same as it is. We would have sin, sickness, death, forever.

No one is found worthy except for one. Jesus. Nobody represents God like Jesus. He was the epitomy of absolute obedience to God even to death on a cross.

At first John doesn't see anyone worthy so he starts to weep. Why is he so upset? John realizes life will go on and on and on as it's been. Life is hard. It's so hard with people dying all the time. We have war, famines, murder, sickness and all sorts of things going on. We need to end this and the only way is to find someone who is worthy to open the judgments to bring this present world to an end.

We read in Romans 8 that even creation eagerly awaits the return of God. We wait for this hope. We wait for this to end; for these days to be over. No more suffering, pain, hunger and violence and all will be well. So John is beside himself here. He's coming unglued. His joy has been replaced with weeping. But not for long.

The Lion of Judah, the root of David is found worthy. He has prevailed (nikao) which means to overcome, conquer, won victory. Just before he was taken to be crucified Jesus said these words in the upper room:

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

At the cross he defeated sin, death and hell. He is worthy. He is the one!

4Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Hebrews 2:14-15

In V6 we see John standing there and he looks now and sees a lamb. Christ not only is called the Lion of Judah but is also called the lamb of God. John uses the term lamb 31 times in Revelation alone and seems to be John's favorite title for Christ. He says in John 1:29:

"Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world."

This lamb bears the marks of death. He saw the nail holes, the piercing displaying the evidence of redemption. He can see it all. In the center of the throne with all authority is the lamb.

This lamb has seven horns which symbolize power and strength. The seven would mean that his strength is absolutely perfect. Along with the seven horns John sees seven eyes which would speak of God's omniscience. He's all seeing being even able to look even into the hearts of men. He knows who's loyal to him and who is not. God is getting earth's report. He's searching for all those who are loyal to him.

9“For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. 2 Chron 16:9

Finally He takes the scroll with his nail pierced hand. He doesn't hesitate. This is the transfer of authority that will close out history and is all based on what Jesus did on the cross.

God has ultimate authority to execute judgment on this earth. He came the first time not to condemn but to save. The second time when he opens the seals he will execute judgment on the earth. When these scrolls are opened, it will be the end of times as we know it now.

We will all come before the throne one way or the other. We will all spend eternity somewhere. The opening of this scroll will bring the greatest judment on earth like never before.

Paul said to Timothy regarding this:

1I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

Be ready anytime. The time is now. We know people are not listening. Tell them anyway. Judgment is not for believers. This time will bring joy to believers. We need to be constant in preaching God's word being careful we're not preaching our words.

Let today be the day to get commited to God before these seals are opened.

Who is Worthy? None But One

Your title, Who is Worthy? None But One, I like that.

Apoc. 5:1 "And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals."

Now that the letters to the Churches have been read, we understand better the condition of the times in which St. John is writing. These were real churches with real people struggling against complacency, materialism, immorality, heresy, and persecution.

This is the same of any age, as in the present including the persecution of Christians all around the world. Devout Christians encounter and must not surrender to these grave hardships of the world, but overcome them. 1St.Jn.5:4.

“None but one”---we can be successful in overcoming and persevering by His example St.John 16:33 and with the strength and graces of our faith in Christ. This is important to keep in mind as we examine the following events.

Apoc. 5:1 "And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals."

My notes call Apoc. 5:1-14 “the Vision of the Transfer of Power to the Lamb” and the scroll that “no one in Heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open” is the central unifying element of the entire first vision.

Right after giving us an almost unapproachable picture of the heavenly Throne Room, St.John, as you say, turns to the One on the Throne holding the scroll that evidently has things written on it front and back and has 7 seals.

The scroll is a piece of writing, so-called episthograph, a rolled up parchment or papyrus strip. The fact that it is written on both sides is a sign of fullness of content or wholeness Ezek. 2:9 and shows its richness. That there are seven seals stresses the hidden nature of the scroll’s contents.

Many agree with Origen who wrote that the scroll is the Old Testament which in its entirety points to Christ and His Kingdom whose true nature remains shrouded in mystery until the seals are broken. What was hidden in the OT was revealed in the Messiah. In any event the scroll which contains world history in its entire evolution as God’s salvation history is the property of the sovereign Lord but He intends giving it to someone else.

Everything in the picture now evolves around this scroll (or Book) and Him who is receiving it and will be made known and at the same time realized by Him who receives it.

Apoc. 5:2-4 "Then I saw a strong angel, proclaiming with a loud voice: “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals? 3 And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it. 4 So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it. ”

For interests sake, the Douay Rheims has open the “book" instead of the word "scroll".

Scrolls were also used in transfers of land. ....We see a picture of this in Jeremiah 32:6-15 when the Lord requests of Jeremiah to buy him land.

I don’t mean to be picky-uun, but couldn’t this be read as the Lord requesting Jeremish to buy Him land? We know that is was Jeremias who purchased the field which demonstrates his strong faith.

Back to the scroll.

The image of the scroll containing God’s hidden plans for mankind was used before by the prophet Daniel and also Isaias 29:11 who refers to a prophecy remaining sealed until the end of time. St.John uses the image to make the point that the End Time, the Last Days, have already begun with Christ so now he can reveal God’s plans.

It is stressed that absolutely no one, no science or ethos is able to look into the secret plan of God, even less realize it. St.John and everyone in fact, would have to know something of what is written on the scroll for if he knows God’s plans about the past, present and future, he will be able to console effectively and encourage loyalty to the anxious and distressed Church. Yet, no one is able to open the scroll and this is why he weeps.

Just so you see the slight difference this is same passage from the Douay Rheims.

“But at that time shall Michael rise up, the great prince, who stands for the children of thy people: And a time shall come such as never was from the time that nations began even until that time. And at that time shall thy people be saved, every one that shall be found written in the book. 2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth , shall awake: some to life everlasting , and others to reproach, and everlasting contempt. 3 Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament: And they that instruct many to justice, as stars for all eternity. 4 “But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time appointed: many shall pass over and knowledge shall be manifold.”

You say that Daniel was troubled by what he saw and that may be true depending on the way these passages are interpetated. However, when the we read the final vision which begins with Daniel 12:5-13, we see that although he would like to know exactly what the last thing to happen before the end will be, the only clear answer he’s given is a clear call to be faithful in the midst of persecution. He’s given some consolation though in v. 1-3, he’s told that those who die faithful, as Daniel will (v. 13), do so hoping in ultimate resurrection. St. Irenaeus says that these words spoken to Daniel referred not to this life, but to eternity which Daniel told regarding this that he cannot understand more than he already knows.

He’s told to “seal up the book until the time of the end... and knowledge shall increase. ” What “until the time of the end... and knowledge shall increase” means to me is the “time of the end” begins with the arrival of Christ and the establishment of His Church kingdom. The knowledge that shall increase concerns the mystery of the Messiah’s kingdom.

We see a hint of a rapture here as well as the end time resurrection. Daniel was troubled by what he saw and was probably only too glad to seal this book up.

If you see a hint of the secret Rapture here it’s becasue you want to see it.

Apoc. 5: 5 "And one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.”

4Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Hebrews 2:14-15

Here, St.John cease to weep for he's learned that there is one, who is able and worthy to accept God's offer, Christ, whose sovereign power was already foretold and as man, He has conquered in the history of the world by one unique act and thereby has identified Himself as the ONe to whom 'full authority has been given in heaven and on earth." St.Matt. 28:18.

Christ, therefore, is able to break the 7 seals. On this the Church teaches on the Vat. II document, Gaudium et spes, 10 that "it is only in the mystery of the Word made flesh that the mystery of man's salvation truly becomes clear. Christ, the Lord, in the very revelation of the mystery of the Father and of His love, fully reveals man to Himself and brings to light His most high calling."

Apoc 5: 6 "And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth."

St.John sees the Victor that has conqured and introduced as a Lion, appear as a Lamb with the marks of slaughter.

Like a "lamb" the favored sacrificial animal of the OLd COvenant, this "lion" has given Himself as an expiatory sacrifice for the sins of all.

The glory of the Lion is that He gave Himself as a Lamb for the redemption of the world. This self-sacrificing path is to be an example to His followers. The victory of the Saints will come through spriritual strength, by keeping their faith in the Truth while enduring suffering and persecution ---not by reliance upon physical strength, deception, or political power. Isn't this is the object lesson for us today and into the future?

What is more is St.John's obvious reference to the Passion and Death of Christ is that the conquering Lion, the slain Lamb, during His reign on earth, has already established His Church kingdom.

The Lamb is a sacrifice for sin, but St.John also focuses attention on the victorious power of the risen Lamb by showing Him standing on the Throne in the center of the vision. The "seven horns" symbolize His unlimited power, also His strength and the 7 eyes symbolize the Spirit of God which belongs to Him and is sent by Him and works with full authority over all the world.

Many agree with Origen who wrote that the scroll is the Old Testament which in its entirety points to Christ and His Kingdom whose true nature remains shrouded in mystery until the seals are broken.

Well I wouldn't agree with Origen. We've got the OT already. No this is something yet to be unvealed at God's direction at a certain time. Daniel was familiar with the OT but yet was very troubled at what he saw in his vision. Besides we are going to be opening these seals as we go and you'll see it's the judgments that are about to happen as each seal is broken. Each seal brings fresh terror.

I do agree that the OT points to Christ in its entirety but the mystery has been revealed in Pauls writings as he uses that exact term many times in his epistle. The mystery has been revealed. Christ was the one!!

For interests sake, the Douay Rheims has open the “book" instead of the word "scroll".

well scroll would be the better translation since they didn't have "books" back then.

I don’t mean to be picky-uun, but couldn’t this be read as the Lord requesting Jeremish to buy Him land? We know that is was Jeremias who purchased the field which demonstrates his strong faith.

didn't I say that? Not getting your question. The whole thing behind this scene is the promise that the Israelites would come back to their own land. The similarity between these two is that this also is a promise that Jesus would come back to claim what is his the same as in jeremiah's day. So yes to the faith issue.

St.John uses the image to make the point that the End Time, the Last Days, have already begun with Christ so now he can reveal God’s plans.

Yes, exactly.

You say that Daniel was troubled by what he saw and that may be true depending on the way these passages are interpetated

I think it's pretty clear to see this in Daniel 10:14-16:

Now I (angel) am come to make thee (Daniel) understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days; and yet the vision is for many days. And when he had spoken such words to me, I set my face toward the ground and I became dumb. And behold one like the similtude of the sons of men touched my lips then I opned my mouth and spoke and said to him that stood before me, O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me and I have retained no strength."

The angel then touches him to strengthen Daniel so he can take in and understand this message without fainting.

If you see a hint of the secret Rapture here it’s becasue you want to see it.

hahahah well it's the blessed hope after all!!

Apoc. 6-7 "And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne."

The Lamb went up and took the scroll describes where the Soverign Lord God hands Him the powere He Himself possesses. The destiny of all and for all lies till the end in the hands of Jesus Christ who has said of Himself, " I have compassion on the crowd" in whom that sacred heart, which He once permitted to be pierced for the love of mankind, continues to beat.
