It's Just Not Right

Theft.

It's been a long time since we've been touched by this violent act. I still remember how violated we felt at the time.

Tonight my son called from KY. His house had been robbed. He got the call from one of his two roommates. He was calling me on the way to his house. I love the way he calls when something affects him. Mom is the first one he calls.

Anyhow it looks like one of his roommates got hit hard, but Bobby had nothing stolen. He has a very nice big upstairs attic room all to himself. He had his laptop and checkbook lying right out in the open. He also has one of those little fire safes up there, but it doesn't look like they even went upstairs. To get upstairs one had to open what looks like a closet door and maybe that's what they thought it was.

One of the boys lost more than two hundred in cash. Alcohol was taken as well as one of his roomate's backpack, probably to stash their loot. At this time, they are awaiting the police. It sounds like kids to me taking mainly cash and alcohol. No big items were missing. Their DVD's were messed up, but they can't see any that were taken.

Only once were we violated by theft, and that was 21 years ago. We were building our new house stick by stick. I remember helping to clear the land that summer, pregnant , with my two toddlers playing in the sand with their tonka trucks. My husband had left the job site at about 11 pm that night leaving outside a new delivery made that very day of about a thousand dollars worth of shingles.

He showed up the next morning at 7am to find all the shingles gone as well as a few tools he left behind in the basement of the house. Fortunately he was in the habit of loading his car up every night with most of his tools, not wanting to leave them laying around. We found one of our tools up in a tree. It was a broken drill; useless anyhow. We saw the tire tracks and figured they were probably waiting for him to leave before they came in to make their late night pickup. It was quite discouraging at the time. He was putting in some heavy hours while going to school part time and working fulltime. I had just delivered my third child so it was a hectic time for us. We never did find out who did this but understood later this is a common thing that happens to new construction sites.

It was pretty crummy we thought. We were barely making it financially, having saved up for over three years to build our dream house. A thousand dollars was alot of money to lose especially for us at the time. Thank goodness insurance came thru for us, and we were reimbursed less the deductible. I think that's the only time we've ever put in a homeowners' claim. I was only 24 years old and remember being very upset. Come to think about it. That's how old Bobby is now. Interesting.

Theft. Something For Nothing It's just not right.

We had our apartment broken into when we lived in Jacksonville. We were barely making it at the time. I think the only things they took were our TV and VCR. Honestly, I don't think there was very much of value in our apartment. I do remember that I had my son's birthday decorations up and I thought how could someone see that and not care about the family living here. Because they don't. It is a feeling of violation. I'm sorry for your son's roomate. Your son is lucky that they didn't get his things.

I have been robbed as well.  And your statement of being "violated" is dead on.  It is a violation, and hard to get over.  Sorry for you son.  Like him, it looked like it was just a bunch of kids that broke in as well, as what was taken was mostly money and small stuff easily carried away.

Yes, but there's now a part II. The thieves came back!! This time all the doors and windows were locked but I guess one window doesn't really lock and that's the window they came thru. This time they took alot of stuff from two roommates but DID NOT STEAL MY SON'S STUFF! He called me again after gettiing another call that they were hit again. He said while he grabbed his checkbook on the way out this morning he still had his laptop and external hard drive in his upstairs room. He said if they took both he was screwed cuz all his research is on these two things. I was sick for him when I got off the phone thinking there's no way he escaped this time. Well he called back and sure enough.....THEY NEVER WENT UPSTAIRS. We're astonished....I told him God protected him. That's all I can attribute this too. He's very strong in his faith even attending church two or three times a week right now. For whatever reason, the thieves didn't "see" the door that led to the upstairs. It kind of reminds me of "The Hiding Place" story by Corrie Ten Boom.

His poor roomates lost ALL their electronics, IPODS, TV's, cameras, VCR's, DVD's etc. Bobby lost nothing. I feel really bad for one of his roommates tho because he's getting ready to head to Greece and all his info was on his computer that was also stolen. I'm actually thinking maybe of sending him a donation to help him recoup. I feel very grateful my son didn't lose his research. That would be worse than losing all his money in his checkbook I think.

Maybe the thief needed those shingles worse than you did. Don't think of it as theft, think of it as 'surpise charity

ya.......right LW.....that's it. I know that's what people say when something like this happens but it didn't quite hit us that way back then.

And your statement of being "violated" is dead on.

yes, it's like..."How dare they? They had NO right to do this." I work hard and they take it under cover of darkness.

Also a neighbor across the street saw a heavyset woman outside the window of my son's house his morning hunched over. He knew they had been robbed the day before so he just shrugged it off as maybe it was the landlord checking the property or something. Too bad he didn't think to call the police. Now they think it was a lookout for whoever was inside. This happened between 10:30-11 am and my son had left for work at 10:30. He walks to work so they were being watched.
