Theft.
It's been a long time since we've been touched by this violent act. I still remember how violated we felt at the time.
Tonight my son called from KY. His house had been robbed. He got the call from one of his two roommates. He was calling me on the way to his house. I love the way he calls when something affects him. Mom is the first one he calls.
Anyhow it looks like one of his roommates got hit hard, but Bobby had nothing stolen. He has a very nice big upstairs attic room all to himself. He had his laptop and checkbook lying right out in the open. He also has one of those little fire safes up there, but it doesn't look like they even went upstairs. To get upstairs one had to open what looks like a closet door and maybe that's what they thought it was.
One of the boys lost more than two hundred in cash. Alcohol was taken as well as one of his roomate's backpack, probably to stash their loot. At this time, they are awaiting the police. It sounds like kids to me taking mainly cash and alcohol. No big items were missing. Their DVD's were messed up, but they can't see any that were taken.
Only once were we violated by theft, and that was 21 years ago. We were building our new house stick by stick. I remember helping to clear the land that summer, pregnant , with my two toddlers playing in the sand with their tonka trucks. My husband had left the job site at about 11 pm that night leaving outside a new delivery made that very day of about a thousand dollars worth of shingles.
He showed up the next morning at 7am to find all the shingles gone as well as a few tools he left behind in the basement of the house. Fortunately he was in the habit of loading his car up every night with most of his tools, not wanting to leave them laying around. We found one of our tools up in a tree. It was a broken drill; useless anyhow. We saw the tire tracks and figured they were probably waiting for him to leave before they came in to make their late night pickup. It was quite discouraging at the time. He was putting in some heavy hours while going to school part time and working fulltime. I had just delivered my third child so it was a hectic time for us. We never did find out who did this but understood later this is a common thing that happens to new construction sites.
It was pretty crummy we thought. We were barely making it financially, having saved up for over three years to build our dream house. A thousand dollars was alot of money to lose especially for us at the time. Thank goodness insurance came thru for us, and we were reimbursed less the deductible. I think that's the only time we've ever put in a homeowners' claim. I was only 24 years old and remember being very upset. Come to think about it. That's how old Bobby is now. Interesting.
Theft. Something For Nothing It's just not right.
