Only to start all over again
Another busy weekend gone by. I was so tired today, I took a three hour nap. Boy did that feel good. It's rainy and cool so I just got my favorite quilt and zonked out bigtime. So now with husband and son in bed I'm here watching my favorite late Sunday night service and I'm not even close to hitting the hay as it gets close to the midnight call.
We got a special invite to visit with and question Barack Obama this past week since he was in our neighborhood. We didn't go, but I guess he packed the place. He spoke at a local High School and from what I understand drew the largest crowd around here for any political candidate. Although he's not on my radar he and his wife Michelle got a very positive response. Sounds like she was the one that people were impressed by, even more than he. She was found to be very intelligent and articulate having all the right answers to the questions put to her. Well you know what they say...behind every successfull man......
I sent off another mid term and final off to LU for grading. I'm thinking maybe if I stay serious I can graduate with David next year. It's just a two year biblical course thru LU but it's going to be more than two years by the time I'm done I think. So I listened to four more lectures in one day on Friday which is about all I can handle at once I figured without zoning out.
We spent the whole weekend doing a dinner theatre. Every year we put on a dinner theatre free to the community. It takes months and months of prep to do this. We even print up free tickets to the event mostly for a dinner count tho, not wishing to turn any away. This year the theme was the fabulous fifties. The whole church was decorated as a diner in pink and black. We had 16 round tables, each set for nine and done up to the hilt covered in bright pink tablecloths. We can do wonders with cardboard, and one of our talented crew fashioned a jutebox and a coke machine that you'd swear from a distance was the real thing. Someone else did a huge cadillac that was plasted to the wall, and of course we had old records abounding as decorative art here and there along with old Sinatra and other movie star posters.
The stage was set up as the focal point of the diner with a counter, bar stools and all sorts of 50's memorabilia up there including a black and white giant tile floor section that would serve as a dance floor for the jitterbug somewhere in the play. They included the audience, per usual, in doing a lottery for a box of Maypo and a can of spam. They also included the audience in a game of bingo. Some lucky guy got called up unawares to be part of "This is Your Life" episode that was hilarious. Both nights the guys, who had absolutely no clue, did a great job in playing along.
The music was classic. We started off near the start of the play with the Hand Jive and that was a blast. As the crew performed the hand jive they walked in and among the audience getting them into fun and soon everyone was doing it. Boy, the music of today just isn't as much fun I found out. It was much more interactive back then. The old folks loved it. Brought them back in time they said. We later had one of the clowns in our church perform "Johnny Be Good." He was excellent as was the girl who played the jilted prom girl who sang "It's My Party and I'll Cry If I Want To."
Yes, we had all the classic stereotypes up there. We had the nerd and his nerdette. We had the football player who tried to give the nerd a point or two about how to get the gal of his dreams. We had the rival cheerleaders dressed in their cute little outfits tossing their pom poms. Only you've never seen cheerleaders like these two. Both are in their 60's. I think Barb is 65 or so. Both are in good shape so they did a great job pulling it off. We had the hairdresser in the bright pink hairdo (think Grease) and we had the trusty crusty mechanic with the grease all over "her" face. Of course, we don't want to forget the owner of the diner and his old cranky helper. I know my son David could have pulled off the Elvis look easily if we had thought of it in time. He's got that mass of black hair, dark eyes and he can do the lip curl on demand. If only we had a jumpsuit laying around...although David looks more like the 60's Elvis and that was before the jumpsuits. Oh well, we didn't think of this until too late.
Anyhow we packed the house for two nights. In between scenes we put out the different courses. We started with rolls and pretzels on the tables with a bunch of us walking around with iced tea, lemonade and water. We then, at just the right cue from the owner of the diner brought out the salads and then later on the meatloaf, mashed potatoes and greenbeans. For desert we rolled out the rootbeer floats. We heard lots of oooohs and ahhhhhs when we brought that out.
Every year the word gets out about this dinner theatre and the people come. It's a great outreach. It's ALOT of work tho and by the time it's over we're ready for it to be as well. The first night I dressed up in pedal pushers, tee shirt and ponytail with a scarf tied on. The second night, in a hurry, perusing through my closet I came up with a Mrs. Cunningham (think Happy Days) look with a skirt , short sleeved knit sweater and pearls with my hair down but a scarf pulling it back. Of course both nights bobby sox and canvas sneakers were on my feet. Lots of makeup with bright lipstick finished me off. I was told today in church that I looked really young last night. Pfft, so what did that make me look today? Old?
Inbetween the two nights, yesterday morning, we had a road race to go to. It's a 6.2 pretty difficult race with the first mile and a half totally uphill and I mean uphill like in I usually have to walk part of it. There's usually about 250 runners. David got third overall and wasn't too happy about that but his training is for an upcoming Mountain Climb that is 7 miles straight up and this race involved a good two mile downhill that involved more speed than strength.
When we got home from the race I had two messages on our machine from the eldest. I heard alot of hooting and hollering and a "I'm at the Creation Musuem" talk and knew that he finally got over to the new Museum on the border of KY and OH. He knows I've been anxiously awaiting the opening of this new museum for quite some time now.
Since my son's a Scientist, he especially has been hoping that this new musuem stands up to all the talk and hoopla that's preceded it wanting it to be worthy of our spending the time and effort of going to. He's had alot of faith in Ham believing Ham is doing great things out there. Since he's also a bit of a perfectionist I knew that if Ham didn't do what he promised to deliver Bobby would be totally let down and disappointed. We knew the critics would be relentless regardless but hopefully it wouldn't also be us agreeing with them for lack of fulfilling what was anticipated by the Creation side of Science. Yes, you can still believe in Science AND Creation and be respectable.
So it took me two days to get ahold of him to find out. No worries. Just before my much anticipated nap I finally did receive that call from him telling me the museum was good, really good. There were a few small things Bobby wished Ham would have done differently but overall he said it was very nicely done. It pretty much takes a whole day to go through. It was packed, he said, and I guess will continue to be for quite some time. On opening day there were four thousand people going thru the doors. All the exhibitions had some sort of waiting line but when the doors opened many were able to go in at once. There was some feeling of Disney in some of the attractions as they tried to teach Science to the kids in a fun and enlightening way. He ate at the Noah's Ark Cafe he said.
Bright and early this morning most of the cast and crew members were at church since most are involved in the Praise Team or teaching classes. I have a feeling I wasn't the only one stealing a nap on this rainy day.
Tomorrow is another day. Whoops...... tomorrow is today.
