A chore to enjoy

Little things make me happy. Today was a good day. Today I hung out my clothes on the line for the first time this year. That made me smile. It was still a bit chilly but there was a breeze, no snow on the ground and a new clothesline just put up by my husband. So I lugged out my big basket and hung out two loads. I hate using the dryer, not only because I am cheap, but also I think hanging clothes out on a line is a lost art and nothing beats the smell of freshly hung-out -to-dry laundry.

There is a trick to hanging out clothes on the line. I actually read an article in the newspaper about this once. In the piece it mentioned that not many hang out their laundry anymore. You can drive by home after home and not see the laundry in the back flying in the breeze like you would say 15 years ago. The article went on to say that you should carefully choose how to place the laundry on the line....and I'm thinking...."I do that." Scary, ya but hey, it makes my day. Things like placing all your big items on the outside and all your delicates ( you know what I mean) on the inside so the whole neighborhood isn't talking about whether your husband wears boxers or briefs.

One chore I never ask my husband or boys to do is to hang out the clothes. They are soooooo bad at this. I find the clothesline looks like a mess with clothes halfway flung up flapping all over the place. Jeans are hung over by the waist folded over the line and it doesn't get dry in that folded crease; shirts and sweaters hung up with the arms tucked up into the sleeve so that when I take them down the sleeves are still wet, as I pull them out, even after a full day of drying . And underwear? They have no clue.

While I don't mind hanging the clothes out, it's more of a chore for me to bring them in. That's when I used to delegate the boys to bring it in for me. After all two thirds of the laundry just so happens to be theirs anyhow. Now that they are all away, my laundry chore is very light. I probably do only two or three normal loads a week. If that. I was pretty much doing that daily before.

So now after hanging out these two loads today.......I think I'll rummage around the house looking for any blankets to be washed. Ahhhhh nothing like a fresh air dried blanket to put on the bed. It's been a long winter.

Spring has finally arrived!! Happy Spring everyone!!

I am still in the couple of loads every day life and I am sure it is about to become a lot more with baby #3.  There are a lot of laundry items I prefer dried in the drier.  I love sheets dried on the line but under, towels and jeans come out much softer in the drier.

My parents and grandparents would chuckle at the thought of anyone enjoying drying stuff on a line.  But like you said, now that it is Spring and you don't have as much laundry each week, it has become enjoyable.  Happy laundering!

Our subdivision has a no clothes line policy..as do most of the newer ones around here.

Personally I won't do it anyway.  The dryer is a modern convenience I adore.  When visiting my in laws we always hang out clothes to dry....I think they get too scratchy that way...and invariably something gets on them that makes me sneeze all night if its on the sheets.  The smell is nice, but all the other things, well just aren't worth it....besides my time is more valuable than what I would save hanging out clothes.

Like Jill I do 2-3 loads a day.

But I know some people LOVE it...my MIL is one.  She loves being outside hanging clothes...I bet she will have a whole bunch for me to help with when I get there in a couple weeks!

Argh.

Wow, I've never even considered line-drying clothes. I thought that was something poor people do...and I felt sorry for them because of all the dust and bugs and other debris their clothes might collect while hanging out there.

Well you've opened my eyes to a lost art. Although I think it looks trashy (clothes hanging in the yard), I might try it some time. I've never experienced that fresh air-dry scent on my clothes. It sounds nice.

HAHAHAHAHA

I just looked out and saw my neighbor hanging up her brand new clothes line!

I asked her about it and she said since our subdivision is older, no one obeys that rule anymore.

So.....I'm still not getting one.

I don't even know if we have a rule about clothes lines. I do know that our back yard is a wind tunnel and I wouldn't risk having my neighbors ending up in possession of my underwear

Well we've been poor, inbetween and now are doing very well and I still hang my clothes out. Oh well, I clip coupons also, but that's another blog.....guess habits die hard.............

I live in the country...we have 11 acres. My line is between 4 poles with the lines going across maybe about 12 lines total. It's in the back of the house so you cannot see from the streetside. It's enough to do about 4 loads. See this way I can put them all out at the same time and go my merry way. I don't have to worry about putting one load at a time in the dryer and then stick around to wait for drying time. You should never leave your dryer going while you're not home. It's one, if not the biggest cause of fire there is. I actually know someone whose home burnt down because of their dryer.

As far as bugs, debris, dust and stuff. That doesn't happen. I get more lint and stuff from the dryer than I would from the outside. Remember the clothes are flapping in the breeze out there. So must anything would come off. I do occasionally bring in a bug but it's rare.

So.....I'm still not getting one

hahahaha I laughed when I read this. You are the stubborn one, eh?

Well some people throw in their towels just for a minute or two to fluff up. I don't bother. Yes I agree I like towels that come out of the dryer as well but after that first shower and dry off they are ok. But they do smell nice coming off the line. Jeans don't bother me at all, they are not usually that bad to me anyway and no one here has ever complained. Maybe that's because they don't know any better.
