He is a Murderer from the beginning

I'm getting ahead of myself here only because I lost all my notes for Revelation 9:1-12 but will get my act together and put that on hopefully soon. I'm skipping ahead, so I can continue with the next two sections. This section is Revelation 9:13-21. Here's the text:

13Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind. 16Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them. 17And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone. 18By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19For their power is in their mouth and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm. 20But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. 21And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

So we start off this section with four angels about to be released. We see they are bound and will be released to kill. We also can see by the text these angels have been prepared, for just this time in the future, to be set free to wreak havoc upon the earth.

The Greek lends itself to this passage in the perfect tense meaning they were set aside long ago bound and continue to be bound and prepared right up until the time God releases them. We are not told why only four angels or who they are even. Perhaps the reason has to do with the four compass points on the earth meaning the release of these four angels will have a worldwide affect. In that case, none will be safe on earth. The whole planet will be affected.

So the question begs to be answered. Are these good or bad angels? The hint is that they are bound. What reason would there be to bind up a good angel? Demonic angels can be referred to as angels. We see here they are set free by Christ himself. Their location is the Euphrates. For those that remember, we know the Euphrates ran through the Garden of Eden and is located still in the modern country of Iraq. They will come from the place where Israel will fear.

We see they are set loose to kill 1/3 of mankind. How many is that? We've seen already in 6:8 1/4 of the population was killed. Here it's 1/3. This equals 1/2 of the world to be affected. Using today's stats this would be 3.3 billion dead. Imagine the impact this is going to have. One half of the planet's population will be gone.

Through all of this we see God's mercy and grace. Yes, it's very evident even here in the midst of this death and destruction. Because God is slow moving in his anger and wrath, he at first spared 3/4 and then 2/3 of the earth's population. Now after all this 1/2 of the population is still alive yet to make their decison for or against God. He doesn't totally wipe them out as he could.

So here we have demonic forces about to be released, but even now with demons all around us to take us down, we have to remind ourselves that we still have opportunities and freedoms we take for granted. There will come a time when all that will end. A day will come when all freedoms and opportunites are lost, and it's finally finished.

We see, looking at v15, that this day has been prepared even down to the hour, date, time and year. This is preordained, set up and appointed by God for this exact time. God will say one day that it's enough. God will say mankind, as we know it, will be gone. Satan's army will be utilized in this endeavor when given the opportunity. They will be allowed to do this and will seize the opportunity to do so. Until then they have no power. We read in John 8:44 Jesus speaking of Satan. He said:

"You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it"

Satan and his legion of demonic angels will be allowed to do their thing but even then they will be limited by one third as seen here.

In v16 we see a description of an army. These four angels will be like four generals in charge of 200,000,000 almost the size of the population of the United States. To put this in perspective, the entire WWII allied forces were about 70,000,000.

So the question put to us now is, is this literal or symbolic? Well we always want to look for the literal sense first if we can. Could this be a literal army of Satan's? John wrote that he "heard" the number. He didn't count them. Could they be human or are they demonic?

Think about the logistics in feeding and transporting a human army this large. Is it even feasible to think about moving this large amount of human soldiers?

There has been some thought thru the years that this army could be made up of Chinese and later it's been thought to be a Muslim army. This would be quite the Holy War a Jihad of all Jihads if it were the case.

None of this can be sustained. We can only wait and see what this will be in the future if we are still here. I take this as literal. These are horses with some sort of demonic riders killing as they ride through the earth. Notice here they are allowed to kill but when the 5th Trumpet was blown the scorpions were not allowed to kill. What we are seeing here, as I said earlier, is the intensity is increasing with every unrolling of the scrolls and blows of the trumpets.

These horses have riders with tri-colored breastplates. Imagine 200,000,000 horsemen with bright colors such as fiery red, hyicinth blue and sulfur yellow. These colors symbolize plaques. Sulfur when it burns gives off a blue tinge. So here we see the colors represented and are called plaques in v18 killing 1/3 of all mankind left on the earth:

Red: Fire
Blue: Smoke
Yellow: Brimstone; sulphur

We see a scary description of these horses. They have a head like a Lion and out of their mouths come, fire, smoke and sulphur. It sure sounds like Sodom and Gomorrah with all this fire and brimstone description.

Job describes a Leviathan in 41:18-21:

18His sneezings flash forth light, And his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.19 Out of his mouth go burning lights;
Sparks of fire shoot out. 20 Smoke goes out of his nostrils, As from a boiling pot and burning rushes.21His breath kindles coals, And a flame goes out of his mouth
.

What is Job describing? It's a dragon like creature he starts off describing back in 41:1. Perhaps Job foreshadowed this creature that we're seeing in Revelation now, and maybe John is going back to his knowledge of the the OT in describing what he's seeing here. One thing to keep in mind is that Satan is called the dragon and from what we're reading here, it seems as tho his army is a likeness of the ol' dragon himself.

In v19 with all the speak of tails, and serpents it seems to bring us back to the Garden of Eden remembering the serpent there bringing death and destruction to a most perfect state of being. We read earlier in this chapter 9 of the locusts. While they are allowed to do harm, they are also instructed not to kill. So once again we see God is turning up the heat a little bit more as he is in complete control.

Back in Luke 10:19 Jesus was giving instructions to the 70 disciples he sends out. He said this:

“Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. "

Perhaps God is giving the 144,000 sealed ones we read of earlier power over all this.

We see by continuing on in Rev 9:20-21 those who don't die still will not repent. Nothing new here even when the heat gets turned up. We talk to people about Jesus today, and they don't get it. God has ripped our hearts open. He's done heart surgery on us. We're excited to tell others about this, yet they walk away unaffected and do not hear or see what we are trying to tell them. This has been going on since the dawn of time, so why should we be surprised? More on this in the next session.

We can grow up in church as faithful attendees. We can learn all the scriptures serving others and still not repent of our sins. We can try and earn all the brownie points we think we need to gain entrance to heaven yet we're only fooling ourselves if we don't lay our sins down at his feet. God wants our heart. He wants us to realize no matter how religious we are it doesn't matter. He doesn't want our religion. He wants us. He wants the personal relationship that religion can't offer. This cannot happen until the heart is broken like an egg; spilled open. Only then will we realize what he's done for us. Until he broke me in two, I didn't get it either.

Nothing matters until he touched my heart. I deserved hell and he gave me mercy. The word of God changes me everyday. There is more to the word of God than just reading a bible. The impact of His word hits like a ton of bricks as it chips away bit by bit finally breaking to bits a cold stoney heart. He then replaces this heart of stone with a new soft clean heart. One that is solely committed to Him and His ways.

Notice tho, they did not repent. Instead they continued to turn to their idols. They exchanged the truth of God for the lies of the evil one. There is a connection to worship and behavior. We see here:

Worship ................................................. Behavior
Demons and Idols....................................Murder, sorceries, immorality, theft

Exodus 20:3 says: You shall have no other gods before Me.

This is being violated in the grossest of ways. Here we see they are worshipping demons and odols. Today we make ourselves idols. We worship self. We are #1 in our lives. We need to look good, eat good, feel good. We need our esteem fully realized. They also will be lovers of selves in the end times. There is nothing new under the sun.

I lost all my notes for Revelation 9:1-12

For those who aren't as familiar with Revelation as you or I, I'll post a short general summary explaining 9:1-12.

Rev. 8:13 is the "Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell on earth" as the angels blow the 5th, 6th and 7th trumpets. The three woes focus on the people on earth and express the horror and compassion
that are to follow those idolaters and those who have been led astray by Christ's enemies.

The first "woe" is in the fifth trumpet vision. God allows Satan and his demonicial forces loose to wreak havoc on those of mankind who refuse to recognize God. St.John describes the damage they do like the Egyption plague of locusts that will strike only the ungodly. Hell will be unleashed but have no power over those who are sealed 7:2-8, who stand by God as they are out of Hell's range.

on Oct 07, 2007
Apoc.9:13 "And the sixth angel sounded the trumpet: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before the eyes of God

The Second “Woe” is also the sounding of the Sixth Trumpet. The Sixth Trumpet is like the fifth trumpet in that the demonic assaults increase in scale and force. St.John assures us that these judgments are coming from God since they originate from the “golden altar”. It is emphasized that God controls the times and the seasons and He permits the punishment and chastisement, even though it is executed by His adversary. All the while He offers mankind a chance to repent of their sins and conform to His ways.

An auditory experience opens this vision. The voice comes from the golden altar of incense on which an angel we saw in the introductory vision 8:3 had offered the prayers of the saints together with the incense. This heavenly golden altar which stands “before God” has the same shape as the altars in the Temple of Jerusalem (Ex. 37:26 ; Amos 3: 14) with its four prominent corners and four horns and from the middle of the horns comes the voice which sets these punishments in motion.

The voice which comes down from the golden altar evidently represents the answer to the prayers of the faithful on earth which the angel had offered to God. Not believing as you do that the Christians are “raptured” away at this time, I’d say that since the punishment strikes only the wicked and ungodly, the prayers are those of severely tried Christians of the final time who would have prayed for alleviation and protection in their persecution.

I'm not getting you here. What prayers are you talking about? The prayers of 8:3?

These prayers of all the saints? You are saying they (the saints) are still upon the earth? Where does it say that?

I'll get to 9:1-12 hopefully soon.

Yes, I'm referring to the prayers of 8:3...remember the angel was given much incense to mingle with prayers of the Church and the smoke of the insence along with the prayers ascended before God...

Apoc. 6:9-10; 8:3 and 9:13-15 is an implicit teaching on the Catholic doctrine of the Communion of Saints. I believe these judgments from God upon the world are an answer to prayer whether from those faithful (Catholics call the Church Militant) still on earth or the Christian souls in Heaven (Saints) (Church Triumphant). This shows the relationship between God in His Heavenly Kingdom and His people on earth. I have no doubt whatsoever that our prayers move Him as the rescuing Heavenly Father that He is. Christ told us to pray the "Our Father". We are petitioning our Heavenly Father each time we pray, "Our Father who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name, Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.."

Here in Apoc. 8-9, St.John tells us the judgment that Alimghty God administers are for the purpose of making GOd's "kingdom come" for at the end of the Divine judgments, the world comes to an end.

The verdict of what will "be done on earth" is first determined in Heaven and the prayers of the Saints are what move God to make the determination in their favor. God does hear us, and uses each prayer to pass His judgments upon the world all according to His timing.

Apoc. 9: 14-16 “saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been held ready for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind. 16 Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them.

St. John is describing a most dreadful, nightmarish vision. The voice (Christ) gives the angel who had the sixth trumpet the command to release four demonic angels who were bound at the Euphrates. We see the timing of their release is fourfold. The only place in Scripture these four time factors,---- hour, day, month, and year---- appear together. And there are four angels of harm. The number four symbolizes the whole world will be at the disposal of these four demonic leaders and the vast size of the army horsemen symbolizes the scale of the evil and sin in the world.

The Euphrates was to the north of Israel. Each time Israel sinned, God sent Assyria, Babylon or Persia against them. In the OT, the land of the Euphrates River was the seat of invasion into Palestine. The direction from which the invasions of the chosen people usually came Is. 7:20; Jer. 46:10. At the time of St. John's writing, this great river Euphrates was the frontier of the Roman Empire and the region from which the Parthians through their feared troops of calvary constantly mounted their threat to Rome. So by naming this locality, the malevolent character of this image is still further underlined.

St. John could be using the great river Euphrates as an geographical backdrop in order to give a graphic example of his intended spiritual meaning. It’s as if he is saying that our enemies are right at the border and there is no stopping them.

KFC writes:
We see they are set loose to kill 1/3 of mankind. How many is that?

Again, St. John uses “a third” because any judgment before the Final Judgment will be designated with a fraction, one-third, or one-fourth. It’s not a judgment upon a literal third of mankind, but merely symbolic way of saying the judgment is partial and prior to the Final Judgment which will come at the seventh trumpet when three-thirds (everyone) will be dealt with.

KFC WRITES:

St. John hears of a 200 million army of evil demons riding on horses. Putting Apoc. 20:8 and v. 16 together, we see this is a symbolic force that Satan uses to go into the four corners of the whole world to deceive nations with his anti-christ gospel. It’s a spiritual onslaught on part of the world population, but not all will fall into apostasy.

I think the killing doesn’t necessarily mean physical killing rather to spiritual death. The “killing” is symbolic for people who have hardened their hearts and have completely turned away from God with no intention of repenting and returning. These are the examples of Habb. 6:4, “if they fall away it is impossible to renew them again to repentance.” They are also described in Romans 1:28-32

And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a base mind and to improper conduct. 29 They were filled with all manner of wickedness, evil, covetousness, malice. Full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malignity, they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 They know God’s decree that those who do such things deserve to die, they not only do them, but approve those who practice them.”

why does it have to be symbolic? Can't it be literal as I've written it to be?

It’s not a judgment upon a literal third of mankind

Why not? Everything else in scripture is what it says so why not here? If it says 1/3 die why can't 1/3 die physically?

Why would it be so specific like this if it didn't really mean 1/3 or earlier when it said 1/4? I don't believe these are symbolic at all. It means what it says.

Apoc. 9: 17-21 “And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fire and of hyacinth and sulfur; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouth and in their tails. These are certainly hellish images. KFC, notice that their mouths do the killing which symbolizes the lying words of the false prophets as they speak lies and false gospels to the world. What are some of the lies they’ll be telling? Here are but a few-----Christianity is a hoax, we are perfectly justified in killing babies in the womb, homosexuality is a normal lifestyle and so is sex before marriage and that Jesus Christ isn’t God.

KFC, you're right...as horrible as these judgments will be, the remaining ones still hold fast to their sins. St.John says twice in v. 20 and again in v. 21 that they “did not repent”. Notice the sins are based on the Ten Commandments. Apoc. 9:20 covers the first three concerning worship of God, while 9:21 covers the last seven commandments concerning relationships among mankind. Christ said that “We will know them by their fruits.”

you know if I thought this was symbolic I'd agree with you because it sounds reasonable. But I don't. You didn't highlight the part that says this is "three plagues" I believe that's what it is. To what extent? I'm not sure. Maybe it's similar to the Exodus plagues? Maybe where we are seeing sulfur and fire and such it's similar to what we saw in Sodom and Gomorroh? Not sure.

But when you look at it from a plague perspective and it's worldwide, it's reasonable that 1/3 could die as a result.

It means they tell lies to the world.

You have to assume it means this. If it meant this Lula it would have said so. The word "lies" is all thru scripture. If it meant it here John would have said so. Read John 8:44.

Precisely, 8:44 tells it all. "The devil is a liar and the father of lies." All lies come from the devil. Apoc. 9:17-21 is all about the devil's demonic followers and his horde of 200 million minions. It's a spiritual battle and he is after as many souls as he can get. He'll seduce them by lies. We learn here that he'll get one-third.

Aren't the four demonic angels released from the Euphrates River area and their horde of 200 million whose power to do harm is from their mouths all liars who will prowl the world deceiving a third of the world?

It's symbolic.
St.John is describing in apocalyptic terms the spiritual battle between good and evil. The battle between good and evil, between God and His enemies for the souls of mankind has been being waged ever since Adam and Eve and God promised them and us a Savior.

Throughout human history, God saves souls and the devil destroys them...Apocalypse is the final story of how this all breaks down.

The plagues taken literally. Let's look at it right now from a plague perspective. One word....AIDS...a disease with no cure in sight. How many people world-wide has AIDS killed?

"The three plagues"----What does St.Paul say about this for he gives 3 stages in the evolution of evil as it prepares mankind for the coming of the Antichrist. I'm thinking of 2Thess. 2:3-10. St.Paul clearly says the "day of the Lord" will be proceeded by "a revolt" meaning a great apostasy. Could this be when a third of the worlds people will be seduced and not receive the love of truth of the Gospel that they might be saved?

Could the three plagues be the leaven of iniquity, the great apostasy and the revelation of the 'man of sin'? Yes, we know that the time of the "man of sins" coming is at "the last hour". At the same time we know that for St.John, "the last times", "the last hour" of salvation history is the time extending from the Christ's Death and Resurrection to His Second Coming and that already many spirits of antichrists have arisen confirming that it IS "the last hour". In this sense, I understand that these Apocalyptic passages mean that much evil is already at work with their lying words, speaking the anti-gospel just before the seventh trumpet blows. These three final plagues will not "kill" all, but only one-third, that is, a part of the world population.

While I agree with much you say here I draw the line at assuming "these plagues" are lies. He's already got them by lies. He's just finishing them off here with the very breath of these demons's mouths. Like the breath of God only brings healing, and comfort to his own, the devil's mouth is putrid and foul and brings anything BUT healing and comfort. In fact his mouth brings death and destruction as we see here.

Throughout human history, God saves souls and the devil destroys them...

yes, but is it symbolic or literal?
