Had Not A Clue

It's funny the things you learn in Sunday School.

Today I learned that the Song Y.M.C.A. was about homosexual men having homosexual sex at the YMCA.

I was stunned. We all were.

It does? I didn't know that.

Did you?

the village people were an openly gay disco band. the disco movement came out of the gay scene in the 70's in part. a lot of gay sex was happenin at the Y apparantly. they were encouraging people to go

First off, I knew the song, but really knew nothing about the Village People, other than they seemed a bit wacked out to me. But really I must have missed all the talk shows back then. As far as the Y..... that does sound vaguely familiar now you say it.

I Refuse to do "the Letters"! ;~D

now I'm feeling really stupid......I did this at all the ball games. I like to have fun and I got on board with everybody else. No more.

Psst... Should we tell her about Cyndi Lauper's "She Bop"?

Haven't got a clue.....Didn't follow her at all. Don't think I want to know.

Only if you want to start a mass debate.

hahahahah you know me well Ted!!

I figured it was just about how the YMCA would help you out if you needed a place to stay. Or, if you were feeling a little down, you coudl go there and play basketball or something.

That's what I thought. Really. I did.

you've always struck me as something of a naif, KFC.

thank you. I'll take that as a COMPLIMENT....even tho it wasn't intended like that. I'd rather be naive than jaded.

Sorry to reinforce your burst bubble, but yep. You are 100% dead-on correct.

so far, everyone I've asked does not know this, including my 23 year old son....He spent four years at an (almost) ALL BOY Military College so you'd think he might know this.

It is a shame about Puff the Magic Dragon tho.

I'm with you KFC.

That's one of my favorite oldies and have sung along with it dozens of time. I never associated "gayness" with the song or the performance of the Village People.

I grew up in a small town and the YMCA was THE place to go after school. There was pool, basketball, ping pong, games galore (that's where I learned to play chess) , and music playing. There was a dance held every Friday evening from 7 to 10.00 where I danced the "twist" and "stroll" and the "waltz" many a time. Whenever I hear the song, I think back on those happy days and am so glad that some adults gave of thier time and kept that place open for us.

You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.
...
They have everything for young men to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys ...
...
You can do whatever you feel ...

Our YMCA was for both boys and girls and we couldn't do "whatever we feel" .... that's got to be at least part of the difference.

I guess you're going to have to stick to the chicken dance from now on? I still think YMCA is a fun song. I don't see why you still shouldn't enjoy it. Like you said the lyrics don't specifically mention gay sex. I had a "Frankie say Relax" T shirt and I had no idea what that meant until years later watching a VH1 show. I was naive too.

Now, I did that at my son's wedding.....with a whole bunch of military guys in uniform. It was hilarious....but is there anything behind that song I should know about?

well now that I know the original intent, it's taken all the fun out of it for me. I don't want to further an "agenda" by laughing at it and having a great time doing so. Everything I do should bring glory to God and I don't see how this can.

I was naive too

you and me both because I have no idea what your tee shirt is all about either.

That's the way it is for me too. Now, for me, the initial innocence and funness of the song is gone.

I can't tell you. It's like trying to explain it to my Aunt Sandra. It's just embarrassing. Let's just say it was a gay sex thing.

Not that I'm against gays, I just don't want to wear a tshirt about it. My opinion has always been that everyone, gay or strait, should keep their sex lives private.

The next thing you're going to tell us is you thought the song "I Like Big Butts" is about cigarettes.

No, no, no!  Trogolodytes was about cigarette smoking!

don't worry kfc, you are hardly furthering any agenda by singing along or doin the "letters" of YMCA. it has LONG since trancended any of that, by about 25-30 years, lol. it is simply part of pop culture. and it's been done at weddings and such for so long, it's almost a "traditional."

and you can glorify God by having fun, smiling and enjoying the companionship and celebration with your family, friends and loved ones when the DJ spins it.

have fun, it's just a pop song

hahahaha you two.......it's just a song?

I'm thinkin right now of Satan saying to Eve.......what's it gonna hurt anyway? Go ahead, enjoy yourself. Knock yourself out. It's just a piece of fruit.

And thank goodness they partook, so that we could exist.
on Jul 03, 2007
god understands if you like a song with mad hooks.

sean and them are right, it's okay to have fun. i don't think god is a nazi.
at least i hope not.

remember, god created hooks. and also, everything else.

Satan took the YMCA AND a hit song about it and used them for evil. Why should we perpetuate evil?
on Jul 03, 2007
I'm surprised you didn't know it as well, KFC. This really isn't news.

Here's one that will have you having less fun. Are you aware that "We Are The Champions" is considered the Gay national anthem? Kinda ironic when a bunch of macho ballplayers play it at their ballgames, doncha think?
